Nashville-based songwriter Ellen Starski delivers a beautiful folk-rock ode to the ups and downs of a relationship with her new video for “Missing You” from her debut solo album The Days When Peonies Prayed for the Ants. The combination of the black-and-white tone of the video with the title of the song sets up the expectation of heartbreak, but the video does more than that. It shows its viewers the stages of this couple’s relationship, allowing for a somber narrative that emphasizes the importance of emotion rather than what you see happening in front of you. Starski explains the ambiguity of the video, saying “there’s truly no message attached to the song, it’s there for an audience to take from it what they will.”
Starski’s thoughtful lyrics shine through the gloominess of the video, showing her ability to create something personal that truly expresses how she feels, and the viewer can feel that as well. It’s more than your typical sad music video, and Starski wanted to show “the rise and fall of [this] relationship that was more than just the traditional flashback scenes and performances that seem to be the trend.”As a result,“Missing You” is a sad yet powerful song with a video that depicts the reality of many people’s lives and relationships.

Kara Grainger may have had more humble beginnings in Australia, but her world travels and body of work speaks to a dozen lifetimes of success. All of her musical influences and inspiration have culminated in her latest 9-track body of work, her full-length Living With Your Ghost that dropped on June 1st. Full of robust harmonies, rock-tinged guitar, and a whole lot of twang, this album has so much attitude that it could give Carrie Underwood a run for her money. (Though we in no way are referring to any of this beaut as “pop music.”)
Not only is her soulful attitude palpable with each track, but the lyrics are something to grasp onto, making Grainger accessible and relatable in the best ways. Personal favorites include “Man Without Soul” and “Broken Record”, but we’re sure most of this album will be the soundtrack to your late night, summertime pool games all season.

Chicago-based rock/lo-fi band Clearance recently released their brand new music video for new track “Had a Fantastic”, and we’re totally digging it. This is the first video released from their upcoming full-length release At Your Leisure. Visually pleasing – with a bit of that vintage feel to the muted colors -, the video displays the band playing in a largely empty room. Greenery appeals to the plant lady demographic of today, with the band singing matter of fact lyrics and drawing you into their esthetic little by little.

Founded in 2013, this up and coming L.A. alternative indie rock band Goon is celebrating their recent singing to Partisan Records. Success is coming quickly for these guys and the reason why is easy to grasp. Their latest single “Choke Throat” plays like a soundtrack to a suspended gaze to the skies. Vocalist Kenny Becker has said the song revolves around a surgery to correct a sinus condition and the after effects that followed. A feeling of throat closure led to what we get to hear as “Choke Throat”.
Starting out with an acoustic sway “Choke Throat” is joined by vocals that echo down a long hall and drone with melancholic subtleties. What has started as sad converts into eerie as sounds in reverse are inserted and a percussive sound picks up the pace and ads texture. The gentle abstract sway also features a touch of saxophone that progressively rises from the distance and takes center stage. If joined by an orchestra the song would have taken the direction of cinematic, the use of the saxophone takes the mood to a jazz induced eye opener. If I hadn’t told you what the song was about, the music alone would make it sound like a more introspective moment about the pondering of life. “Choke Throat” is one of those songs that can be interpreted in many different ways. A benefit of this is that it will affect many people as they will take what they need from it. When the chorus section becomes more full and robust the song doesn’t seem so sad. It feels like the light at the end of the tunnel.

LA-based producer Josh Pan just released his latest single, a track titled “Wait For Me”. Pan collaborates on his latest with the duo X&G. How do you change the expectations of what EDM and electronic should sound like? Easy, just listen to “Wait For Me.” What I thought would be a rock track, soon shifts to sounds of electronic piano and organ. Combined with ethereal sounds of synth and unexpected bass drops, “Wait For Me” proves to be one of a kind. It even incorporates a jazzy, gospel feel with the ever present sound of electronic keyboard. “Wait For Me” will keep you listening and wondering what will happen next. On his latest single, Pan really takes creative liberties by incorporating folk-rock into a familiar electronic sound. What’s even more, is Josh’s ability to create a memorable vocal sound as a baritone on “Wait For Me”. The track is unique, and if you’re like me and love new music, then “Wait For Me” is for you.
Tancred is excited to release their latest album, Nightstand. The release of Nightstand follows up on the well praised 2016 album Out of the Garden. The album rounds out with eleven tracks, the first fittingly titled “Song One.” It is slow, sweet, and at 1:44 it is all too brief. Jess Abbott (Tancred) shows off her vulnerability on this track. “I will not lie to you, these words will be true,” leads the first line of Nightstand. “Why must she love someone else?” wonders Tancred. “Apple Tree Girl” has a folk indie vibe to it, with some interesting lyrics. “Drink my heart out, drink it up,” and “send me a photo, the two of us in the unknown,” make for interesting and almost emo lyrics.
I really enjoy Tancred’s “Underwear”. The song starts off slow and self-loathing, almost punk. “I don’t want to fight you, I’m already fighting me…and I’m losing,” sings Jess before the guitar comes in. The quirky title comes from the electric song line: “Remember when we were in the halls at 5am in our underwear running from ghosts and in my room I was learning that you were soft.” “Rowing” the last track on Nightstand, equally mirrors “Song One” and again shows the artist’s honesty and vulnerability. “I am crude and sweet in bed, I am gentle in a dress,” sings Tancred. With a taste of rock and tambourine, tinged with Tancred’s simple vocals, “Rowing” is a series of positive, gentle thoughts.
Nightstand, in one word, is diverse. It shows Tancred’s ability to navigate through a series of genres and styles, while remaining true as an artist.

Nashville-based folk rock artist Jerry Castle has been making waves with his brand of Americana for quite some time now, and we’re absolutely thrilled to announce that we’ve got the exclusive premiere of his brand new lyric video for “Room to Dance”. The sweet, slowly meandering track about a special connection between two people is absolutely beautiful, allowing for his rough vocals to add a depth to it all that might not otherwise be present. And while the lyric video is pretty straight forward – providing the lyrics scrolling across a red – at times glittering – backdrop, the song itself provides some introspective moments that will help you welcome June in a positive mood.
Says Jerry of the track:
“Room to Dance” was the very last songs written for the album. I had already mastered the album, so obviously I had no intention of putting any additional songs on it. But one day in Nov 2017, my buddy Carey Ott came over for a hang and we got into this conversation about the magical impact that strangers sometimes have on your life. The next thing you know, we had our guitars in hand, trying to write a song about it. It wasn’t until we wrote the first line of the chorus “you’ve got to get out of line while there’s time, time to take, time to take a chance” that I realized this song fit right into the theme of the album and I started getting really excited about it. A day later I was recording the song in my studio. Collectively, it’s one of my favorite songs on the album and it has the least amount of instrumentation of any song on the album.

Vanessa Carlton – whose career skyrocketed with the release of her debut single, “A Thousand Miles”, in 2002 – is well-versed in what makes a single work. With her latest series of releases, she shows the world a different side of her musicianship. Her cover of Neil Young’s “Only Love Can Break Your Heart” is the third in an installment of six that she has vowed to release over a timespan this year. Its reverb-soaked predecessors include Robyn’s “Call Your Girlfriend” and Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams”, with three more surprises to come over the next three months.

Coming from an artist that has a mixed bag of previous skills is the “sonic brainchild” of Los Angeles based photographer and visual artist Jeff Fribourg is Numb.er. This incredibly modern synth-rock outfit started from a growing passion for synthesizers and a desire to enter the music industry with a sound that is unlike anything we have ever heard before. With his incredible knack for structure and design, each track produced by this rather unorthodox artist is built to be both appealing to the ear and bring something completely new to the eclectic musical world.
Most recently, Fribourg has release an all new single entitled, “Again,” which is a perfect compliment to the tracks that he has released in the past. As he continually releases more and more music, it becomes clear that his understanding of his sound also increases, which results in even more impressive productions. Living outside of a specific genre, Numb.er embodies several different genres that inspire Fribourg to create something completely his own. While listening to “Again,” fans can enjoy elements inspired by punk, shoegaze, and post-punk. This freedom allows the music produced to be as natural and organic as possible, which showcases Fribourg’s wide rage of skills and talents. With so much in store for listeners around the world, we are all eager to watch and see just how far Fribourg will go.
