knox white, “you’ve been my girl”

knox white, “you’ve been my girl”

Knox White is dropping his brand new track, “You’ve Been My Girl” this Friday, and we couldn’t be more excited. The artist has had quite a star-studded bunch of mentors, meeting Lionel Ritchie and Paul McCartney while bartending in Los Angeles. After moving to New Orleans for a time to get inspired by the music scene there, Knox White is back in L.A. and preparing to release his debut self-titled record this July. “You’ve Been My Girl” is the first single off the EP, and with this small taste of his music, we can’t wait to hear the rest of his songs.

“You’ve Been My Girl” is the perfect marriage of R&B and chill indie pop; the Prince influences shine on this track. It’s got emotion-packed lyrics, smooth vocals, and one heck of a guitar solo – the trinity of a great song.

Says White of the track, “When it comes to love we all have that one person we come back to, no matter what.” Anyone will be able to vibe to this song.

saígo captivates with “neither”

saígo captivates with “neither”

“Neither” is an inspiring song from soulful singer-songwriter SAÍGO.  “Neither” is a song about our unrealistic expectations that we get from the people that we admire.  These unrealistic expectations can come from our heroes and even our idols. The disappointment from our idols comes from when we have realized that our heroes are not who they make themselves out to be.

SAÍGO’s voice lingers with soul and gives the song some sort of peace or serenity.  The song is not only captivating, but is a great intro to his new music this year. “Neither” has a powerful message behind it that encourages the listener to focus on yourself and not the people that you look up to because they may not be who you think they really are.

With a song like “Neither”, SAÍGO makes it hard to patiently wait for his upcoming EP this year.

chelsea lankes, “easy”

chelsea lankes, “easy”

Nashville pop sensation Chelsea Lankes debuts a mood shift with her latest single, “Easy.” Lankes, who previously composed a variety of downhearted anthems is expressing a different set of emotions in her newest song. The musical shift follows a significant life event for the “Easy” singer; a wedding. The newlywed describes the song saying, “It’s a song about being able to be 100% true to who you are and willing the right person in your life.”
“Easy” depicts a blissful story of a beautiful, easy love. The song features a catchy pop tune, driving synthesized beat, dreamy instrumental, and captivating lyrics. The song emanates genuine feelings of being at peace in a relationship, a dramatic turn from Lankes previous breakup songs. The melody possess an ethereal, positive sound that’s guaranteed to put listeners into a sunnier, more hopeful mood.

aja warren, “show me the magic”

aja warren, “show me the magic”

“Show me the magic” is the single release of an E.P. soon coming from Aja Warren. The epic theatrical intro sets the scene with a soft synth and graciously applied strings. As the mountain conquering intro leads the way into bass strings and strong vocals the goosebumps begin to swell and that hair on the back of my neck started to stick upright all I can say is, Wow.
“Show me the magic” slides from this soft power into a really driving impactful chorus in full symphonic surround sound. While the vocals could be the leader in this instance, it’s appealing that it’s perfectly mixed and that there is no leader, it’s all or nothing. “Show me the magic” instills that feeling right before you give up and ask one more time, give me what you got if there is really something there. It’s sad but with hope. Soft and powerful.
Aja has a voice. A really compelling voice that delivers emotion on a scale that reaches into your chest. I’m gonna say if you cant feel it, you likely have no soul. This is Tori Amos talent minus the obscure lyrics. “Show me the magic” has delivered a high that you actually have to come down from. It’s just so chilling how expressive Aja projects her voice.
This music belongs in a theater of the utmost elegance and backed by a gracious symphony. If listening at home, I recommend a calm candlelit environment, some flashy satin sheets, red and black would be ideal, and that perfect bottle of wine.

febueder, “hans”

febueder, “hans”

Today, the internet gains a treasure trove with Ascot-based indie duo Febueder‘s new music video release. Mixed by Marta Salogni (Björk, Frank Ocean, The xx), “Hans” exists in a rich, expansive soundscape enhanced by the lush, brooding vibes of the video directed by Lexi Kiddo. The video itself is a work of art, clean lines and solid blocks of color somehow adding layers to the painful reality you see unfolding, as our protagonist climbs and climbs to what feels like no avail, carrying a boulder along with him. It’s emotional and raw, and induces a range of emotions over its quick 3:13 timeframe.

post animal, “ralphie”

post animal, “ralphie”

Starting out in 2014 from Chicago Illinois is the recently signed road warriors and psychedelic rockers Post Animal. No joke while checking out their Facebook page, I was scrolling and scrolling through posts that were all tour stops throughout the U.S. dating back more than a year.

Hitting the road and pounding the pavement with their signature brand of music you swore you’ve heard before dominating radio waves in the 80’s, this 5 piece has been gaining attention, entertaining the masses, and will be hitting the road yet again in support of their debut full length album, When I Think Of You In A Castle appropriately available on 4/20 through Polyvinyl Records.

“Ralphie”, the band’s first single from the album, begins with an 80’s commercial pop synth line that becomes layered with a scale familiarly reminiscent of 70’s classic rock guitar riffs. Even with its commercial appeal, the first 21 seconds are a very technical and dynamic attention-grabber.

Originally a 6 piece group, Post Animal released an EP in 2015 and a collection of singles in 2016. Given the success and demands of Stranger Things, drummer Joe Keery, “being a member since the bands’ inception”, his role is stated as being “and inactive touring member”. He does still contribute and you can hear his vocal talents on “Ralphie”.

Post Animal has indie pop rock-ish hooks in their chorus lines, specific and clear-cut bass guitar and drum contributions, meticulously classic rock constructed guitar riffs that utilize delay to ad that psychedelic significance and verb usage that should land Post Animal into the Reverb Hall of Fame.

To sum it up, get out your blender and grab an 8-track of The Byrds’, a summarized memory from Woodstock, a record from Kansas, a cassette from Gary Numan, a VHS copy of an 80’s Revlon commercial and a Police CD. Post Animal have the ingredients that make aqua net girls bop their heads and smack their gum in unison, and make the high school douchebags lift the Firebird’s T-Top, roll down the windows, crank it up and squeal tires pulling out of the parking lot.

Pre-Order When I think of you in a Castle available through Polyvinyl on LP, Cassette, CD or digital download and be sure to catch Post Animal on tour and as a part of The Shakey Knees Festival in Atlanta GA this May.

baum, “this body”

baum, “this body”

BAUM celebrates her body with her latest single “This Body.”  The L.A. artist and current undergrad of USC’s music program calls on  inspiration for her “This Body” through her experiences with an eating disorder and being cat called.  I love hearing sassy songs, but some of my favorite lines include “Scare me by saying I’m sexy, I’ll never kiss you”, “…don’t call me Barbie, does it look like I own a fucking thing in pink?” and the best one in my opinion is “This body, this body, my home, my home.”  With its upbeat tune and powerful message, “This Body” will have you ready to take on the world.

hoodlem, “teenager”

hoodlem, “teenager”

Electro R&B artist Hoodlem just released their newest single “Teenager”.  What I thought was going to be an upbeat pop song is, in fact, a slow yet sultry track.  While the title implicates “teenage love,” the song is about growing older and having that feeling.  We at one point have experienced that “crush” feeling, which you may think go away as you get older but it doesn’t.  Whether you’re 25 or 55, when you meet someone new, you still get that feeling.   Hoodlem’s “Teenager” encapsulates that feeling in one lyric “I wanna know all about you.”
