mien, “odyssey”

mien, “odyssey”

With members from all over and all kinds of musical backgrounds, it’s no wonder that MIEN is a veritable treasure trove of sonic fanaticism. MIEN is made up of Alex Maas (vocals, samples, loops), Tom Furse (keyboards, programming), Rishi Dhir (bass, sitar, keyboards) and John-Mark Lapham (keyboards, samples, programming). The four-piece has just dropped the video for their new song “Odyssey”, off their recently released self-titled debut album. Virtually an outlandish collage of adult magazine cut-outs, the video for “Odyssey” takes the viewer on a psychedelic journey that perfectly matches the vocals and instrumentation of the track.

John-Mark Lapham says of the song:

Odyssey started out as an instrumental by Tom. I had heard a song [“Tchi Tchi Vox”] by an 80s band called Vox Populi and I tried sampling the  chorus, which is in Dutch. It didn’t work, but Vox Populi ended up re-recording the vocals for us. The tchi-tchi boy can be whatever you wanted it to be, especially since it is in another language. It is like a musical Rorschach test. Could be she-she boy, chi-chi boy…

san mei, “wonder”

san mei, “wonder”

Since her debut EP Necessary in 2017, up and coming Australian artist San Mei has been working on releasing more of her more refined sounds. After waiting quite some time, fans from around the globe are welcoming in her newest single, “Wonder” which is a beautifully composed precursor to the rest of her EP which has been scheduled to drop later this year. From the time Mei began on this journey in the world of music, she has gained experience on stages throughout her native country and hope to push that boundary even further in the near future. Along with all of this recent success on stage, this budding dream pop musician has clearly spent countless hours evaluating and perfecting her unique sound that her fans have come to love and expect.

“Wonder” is a well written and composed single full of beautifully lush and complex soundscapes that have a distinct psych-tinged feel that San Mei wields with power and authority. While discussing her latest release, she said, “It’s about that classic butterfly moment you get when someone unknown to you captures your attention, and you’re not sure why. It’s that person becoming a daydream to you, wondering who they are, what they’re about, and not necessarily wanting them to become anything more than some intoxicating illusion.” What is not an illusion, however, is the sheer amount of talent and promise that is displayed in the revolutionary use of synth melodies that captivate and move listeners. With this new single out and even more that has been promised in the coming months, San Mei is one to watch.

wnt-al-n, “leave it on the floor”

Breaking out one of the greatest singles that is promised to get listeners dancing throughout the world is pop artist and producer WNT-AL-N (pronounced Went All In) who has just dropped his latest single, “Leave it on the Floor.” After being influenced by several cultures as a child, this up coming artist has found a way to mesh the sounds of his multi-faceted home experiences into one cohesive sound that is both infections and incredibly innovative. “Leave it on the Floor”  is a melting pot that combines elements of Caribbean pop, funk, reggae, hip hop, and even a hint of jazz into a single that is promised to please across the globe. Throughout the single, listeners can enjoy the funky guitar twangs as well as vocals that are as clean as they are enjoyable to listen to. When speaking of his latest release, WNT-AL-N said,

“We all need an outlet from the stresses that society, family, finances, work etc. put on us. Picture a carefree childhood where you’re enjoying life to the fullest and you’re all about being in the moment. Growing up, music was my escape to a place where I could go all in. I think all we need is the ability to tap back into that as an adult. I always want my songs to have substance and tell my story even if it’s a turn-up record.”

Not only does this artist give something for fans to talk about on stage, but his off-stage life is just as impressive. While WNT-AL-N is not creating and producing more music, he often travels between Atlanta and Singapore in order to aid the homeless and victims of human trafficking and abuse through his work with Hanoi-based non-profit organization Blue Dragon.  Without a doubt, his future music has promise considering the quality and impressive skill demonstrated in, “Leave it on the Floor,” making him one of the key players in the developing music community.

meijin bruttomesso (aka rocker stalker), “music to dine alone to”

Are you an aspiring spinster? Are humans letting you down left and right? Are cats slowly becoming the only company  you can depend on? Then, look no further (for anyone),this playlist is for you: Music to Dine Alone To.
I’m releasing this playlist on May 1, which I affectionately refer to as, “Mei-Day,” when I celebrate being an independent person and give my self some self-love,  self-care and self-deprecation.  In other words, this playlist is for those lonely times. They can get pretty frequent as an adult in this modern age, especially if you aren’t fond of texting, social  media and dating apps as the sole tools for human connection.

Feel free to dance in the mirror, bang your head, or cry into you gallon of ice cream to these tunes. Enjoy yourself!

little monarch, “tangerine”

little monarch, “tangerine”

LA-based indie-pop band, Little Monarch is hitting the music scene with their very first single of the new year, “Tangerine.” This exciting new release is a wonderful display of everything that fans have come to know and adore about this young, thriving group. In many ways, Little Monarch is the life blood of the young music scene and they will continue to be so as they follow up this hit single with an EP loaded with the same fun, energetic vibes that they so beautifully highlighted in, “Tangerine.”

Speaking of their latest single they said:

We are so excited to release new music and start tour! ‘Tangerine’ is the first single off our upcoming EP. The song started with the guitar riff, and we found ourselves building on this feeling of escaping to a magical island off an emerald bay à la Wes Andersons ‘Moonrise Kingdom’.  Leaving your old ways behind in search of the next great adventure.

Although this is a relatively young band, they have talent and musical skill that leaves very little to be desired. Jam packed with lyrical genius and spunky soundscapes, there is a overwhelming sense of organic joy that is relayed through every aspect of their composition. As every beat is coupled with vocal artistry, there is no doubt that this team has the potential to reach all new heights with this exciting new release.

plaza, “in the know”

plaza, “in the know”

UK-based indie quartet Plaza just released their latest single “In The Know”, which is pleasing with its rhythmic, steady beats and chill vibes from the very beginning of the track. Exactly at the minute mark, “In The Know” drastically shifts into a fast paced beat.  Plaza talks about being at the precipice in their single, singing: “It’s like I’m stuck in the know, just when I needed the most.” “In The Know” is an inspirational track that will surprise you, as it is a testament to the middle that we all fight to push out of everyday. The track reminds listeners that, yes, it will all be okay in the end.

seven questions with irene greene

seven questions with irene greene

I had the pleasure of interviewing Irene Greene, a Philadelphia based singer-songwriter who released her enigmatic single “Platinum Baby” just today. After speaking with her, I have been beyond elated for the release of the single, and now we might be playing it on repeat. But I digress. Below, you can find what Irene had to say on her latest single and her inspiration for music.

When did you first decide that music was something you wanted to make a career?

“It was when I was a child, and I knew that nothing else would feel like making music does.”

Your debut single is titled “Platinum Baby.” What’s the story behind that name?

“The story is that I fell in love with my current partner who has (dyed) platinum hair, and how I felt that I wasn’t good enough for him.”

The cover art for this shows a girl holding a knife behind her back. Is this symbolic or where did you draw inspiration for that?

“It’s gonna sound silly, but I had a dream with a girl holding a knife behind her back. I love toying with line of love verses obsession in “Platinum Baby” and I think that this image captures it perfectly.”

This is your debut single. Is this single reflective of “Hey this is me as an artist”?

“Normally not, because this song is actually somewhat positive and I am a debby downer.”

Even though “Platinum Baby” is releasing May 1st, are you working on anything currently that we can look forward to?

“I’m putting out a new music video for “Platinum Baby” that is 1960s inspired and very spooky!”

Where do you hope to see yourself musically in the next five year?

“Hopefully touring around the country with my band and playing sweet tunes!”
