semi automatix @ el cortez

semi automatix @ el cortez

Semi Automatix ripped through a set at El Cortez in Bushwick Brooklyn. The five piece group led by Tim “TC” Cribben on vocals played the punk set with a charm and charisma thats hard to match in the genre. Bassist Matt Gevaza and drummer JR Jensen synced and throbbed through a set that almost shivered with energy. Guitarists Mike Gevaza and Greg Odette traded lead harmonies seamlessly across the stage. Semi Automatix is a punk band by definition,  the set  however showed more depth and emotion in the songs than we have come to expect from the genre. If you can imagine the mid 90’s Long Island Punk sound and meld it with soaring classic rock solos from the 60’s and 70’s you might have an idea what Semi Automatix sound like. The set was a beautiful mix of punk energy and Marc Bolan-esque tenderness that just worked. You can check out the latest single “Never Fading” below.

inspired & the sleep, “first time”

inspired & the sleep, “first time”

San Diego/L.A. based two-piece Inspired & the Sleep has just dropped a brand new track called “First Time”. Inspired & the Sleep is made up of Max Greenhalgh (producer/singer-songwriter) and musician Bryce Outcault, accompanied by additional artists at times. Having just released a new song, Inspired & the Sleep looks to propel themselves into their musical future with a refined sound.

The band says of their new track:

First Time” is a song I wrote at the start of a relationship. The song is about the very first time a couple catches themselves opening up to each other. I feel like when you’re alone for an extended period you tend to naturally become guarded just as a way of protecting yourself, but it takes even more strength to get to a point where you can let yourself love again. There are certain events that I recall in my life that have led me to where I am in life. “First Time” recollects an event where my ex got a DUI while I was in the car with her. Even though it was tragic event, it did end up bringing us closer together at the time.

The new track moves the listener across a floating soundscape anchored in a solid beat and highlighted by Greenhalgh’s vocals. Both vulnerable and strong, the track clearly displays the band’s ability to show a gentle side that is also confident. “First Time” is not a track to miss, so check it out today.

With over 5.5 million streams on Spotify under their belt, The Palms have release another song that has been pitted to be as, if not more, successful than the last. Their most recent release, “Love” is a single that is full of the same talent and flare that they brought in their previous releases with even more for fans to adore. Released on March 30, The Palmshave re-imagined, “Love,” by Lana Del Ray.

Within their music, fans can expect to find hints and nuances from that cover several different genres including pop, hip-hop, folk and more. As they set out to recreate and redefine the music industry, they decided that labels could not bind them to a specific type of sound or style. Together, Johnny Zamvetti and Ben Rothbard have explored the depths of several different areas of music which has resulted in the creation of a very specific, defined and unique sound that they have since coined as their own. Determined, they have worked to secure their place in the music industry and reassure fans that their presence would undoubtably become permanent. Their authentic and DIY feel has propelled them into a realm of quick independent success that has become rare in recent years.

sway clarke, “friend zone”

sway clarke, “friend zone”

Unrequited love can be difficult. It can be especially difficult when it comes to having any romantic feelings for one of your friends. Getting placed in the friend zone is a spot that nearly everyone wants to avoid, a place that does not make you feel like you will ever be set free. In his latest song “Friend Zone”, Sway Clarke captivates the feelings of being placed in the friend zone.

Even though the song is titled “Friend Zone”, it takes a different approach to what being in the friend zone is truly like. The song is about your significant other breaking up with you for someone else. Even though your significant other broke up with you, the four word line is used: “Let’s just be friends”.

The song has a unique tone to it. In the song Sway Clarke reminds us what it is like to be exiled to the friend zone. With his song “Friend Zone”, Sway Clarke proves why he is a force to be reckoned with in music.

launch day: a work in progress

launch day: a work in progress

My name is Meredith, and it’s time to kick start this musical journey for you guys. Imperfect Fifth came from an idea that popped into my head several years ago, when I was working in a law office having already lived what seemed to be an entirely different lifetime working in entertainment in New York. Imperfect Fifth was during the days before I was the Editor in Chief of Impose, it came at a time when I had way less of an idea of what I was doing in the industry, and crazily allowed my voice to be inhibited.

Through my last few years career-wise, I’ve discovered I don’t want to lose that voice that I have. I don’t want to lose the zest for music that keeps my heart pounding out of my chest. I don’t want to lose my integrity among the mess. I want to bring clear, positive messages to the world through music… and I want to write the words to justify the feelings that music gives us. I want to work with like-minded, brilliant people who are dreamers, but who are willing to put in the legwork to make those dreams a reality. I certainly have encountered that passion over the last few years, but especially in the last several weeks. So I’ve decided to see where this goes, and I hope you’re all kind of diggin’ it.

I’ll admit there will be some kinks to work out. I purchased the domain only Monday (yeah… two days ago) and didn’t get it verified to start building out until yesterday… right about at the point I locked myself out of my apartment with no keys, no money, no phone, and a pizza I had made fresh, sitting on the coffee table for Schmidt to devour. Right when I was ready to dig in (and not miss my TODAY deadline), I had to walk a mile to my sister’s house (Thank goodness she lives so close!), and try to get her attention with no doorbell installed and no phone or car outside to ease her mind into realizing it was me.

Basically I banged on windows and doors and yelled into her mail slot and open windows until she wasn’t afraid I was a robber anymore.

Eventually – with the help of my neighbor’s email address and some patience – I got back in. And yeah, I may have missed some good coding time, but I actually feel really good about introducing a site called “Imperfect Fifth” in this way. Imperfect, but still with something to say. That’s why I took my time with it today, and why I’ll be optimizing it as I go. It’s a learning process for me, because I’m doing it all on my own.

For now.

I say that because this sucker will grow. Quickly, like the sunflowers we used to brand it with for the first phase of its life. And I will embrace the community that has nurtured and supported me the last few seasons of my life, and we will continue to – in small steps – make the industry and our community a better place to reside. One piece of art at a time.

P.S. Ma! Dad! Happy Anniversary! {{definitely chose to launch today because of the importance of 9/13 in my life}}
