Here is a playlist of songs by artists, groups and bands who truly and deeply inspired me both musically as well as influenced my life in a big way. The songs range from punk, alternative, old country blues to pop and hip hop. Some of these songs were recorded by producers who influenced me or even some people who I worked for during my time LA. Some of these songs I listened to as a teenager in my room and dramatically changed my life. Some of these songs are songs that I discovered later in life or on different tours.
Chicago-bred psych pop quintet Post Animal – expertly comprised of Dalton Allison, Jake Hirshland, Javi Reyes, Wesley Toledo, and Matt Williams – truly brought their A Game with the release of Forward Motion Godyssey today. Leisurely rolling into an easygoing soundscape with “Your Life Away”, the 80s-inspired fade-in on second track “Post Animal” is both nostalgic and frantic. “Schedule” brings us back to a more 70s-psych aura, bright vocals and crashing cymbals leading the way.
“Fitness”, as its predecessors, has a completely different feel, bringing with it an audible sense of mystery. “In a Paradise” feels more 80s hair band, a track we could easily see being placed in the soundtrack of Top Gun II, if things were to go our way. (The first minute at least, before it goes into more Guitar Hero territory.) “The Whole” is an instrumental track that sounds as though it should be played in queue for a Star Wars attraction. Glittering and lovely, it paves the way for “How Do You Feel” (Note: NOT a question) in a way that highlights the synth in both tracks.
“Safe or Not” brings with its title a mystery, and with its soundscape more of a dance track than anything else. We can very much imagine “Private Shield” as more of a contemporary Warped Tour track, while “Damaged Goods” rips hard, and we’re totally smitten. “Sifting” is the eleventh and final track, bringing the listener’s heart rate back down after a short burst of ethereal energy mid-track.

Today, indie pop sensation Beabadoobee released the official music video for her track “Sun More Often.” Animated by Elliot Bech, the entirety of the video is a gorgeous black and white cartoon with images alluding to the Space Cadet EP. While she soulfully sings, her words breathe life into your day as she implores you to look at the bright side of things, with lyrics like: “If you try/You’ll see/That the world’s/Not scary as it seems.”

Los Angeles-based Electro-pop artist Stefan T has just released an electric new single by the name of “Keep Me Guessing”. The Berklee College of Music alum is responsible for the vocals, instrumentation, and production of his new track, and it precedes the release of his upcoming album Night Shift.
The song explores love and relationships, specifically being caught in an endlessly toxic and manipulative cycle. Of the inspiration for the song, Stefan says, “ The song follows a conversation between two characters in a twisted relationship. In both verses, it’s character one looking for attention and wanting to give affection but in reality, they never follow through. In the pre-chorus and chorus, character two is calling out character one on their manipulation of the relationship and they’re tired of the games. In the end, both parties just keep playing the same game, because they’re too afraid to fall out of love. “The electro-pop track employs bluesy guitars and passionate and soulful vocals courtesy of Stefan T himself. Recording artist Kaylie Foster adds depth and feeling to the already soulful track with backing vocals that are simultaneously haunting and pure.

Indie-pop/alt-rock act Cannibal Kids announce their new track “Voicemail”. This release is in anticipation of the band’s upcoming album deadheads, set to be released Feb. 21, 2020.
“Voicemail” brings back some youthful energy to the indie scene. The surf rock influenced sounds come heavily from the band’s hometown of Florida. They channel the feelings of bright, sunny, and face-paced Florida to create songs like “Voicemail” with sensuous guitar lines and pulsating baselines.
Cannibal Kids write songs about love, heartbreak, and their reality. Most times the lyrical context is a juxtaposition to the beachy vibes of the instrumentation.
Brighton, UK act CIEL released the lead single “The Shore” off their upcoming album Movement, set to be released this Spring. “The Shore” gives the first glimpse of their dreamy alt-pop world with interwoven guitars, pulsing bass-lines, and intriguing vocal harmonies.
Lead singer Michelle Hindriks describes the song as “feeling stuck in your life and waiting for it to ‘really’ begin; yet at the same time, your realize it’s just an illusion and your life has already begun and you’re living it right now”. Continuing “losing the connection with that essence can feel extremely frustrating”.
Overall, CIEL’s sound is one that feels nostalgic while also being innovative. Bringing both these things together only adds to their mystique.
California duo Best Coast are set to drop their newest record Always Tomorrow on February 21, 2020. The album will be released through Concord Records and was produced Carlos de la Garza, with additional production from Justin Meldal Johnsen. This will be the band’s newest release since their 2015 record California Nights.
The first track to be released from the album was “For the First Time” back in the fall. Now they are dropping their next track, “Everything Has Changed”. The new track was shared through a music video, directed by Ryan Baxely. The video features characters from lead singer Bethany Cosentino’s favorite show, Vanderpump Rules.
Always Tomorrow is a look back on the past 10 years of Cosentino’s life. Through the emotions of personal discovery, newfound sobriety, touring, and heartbreak, listeners witness Cosentino close one chapter of her life and the beginnings of her new one. Leaving behind all the bad and focusing on and moving forward with the good. The main theme and biggest take away of Always Tomorrow is acceptance.
This album is influenced by the sounds of those found in The Go-Go’s, The B-52’s, Fleetwood Mac, and Talking Heads. With sonic sounds and the feel of woozy pop, Best Coast continue to make a name for themselves in the independent music scene.

Anybody else ready to see an improvement in climate change law and the way we take advantage of our precious baby Earth? Alt-pop collective Little Dume has taken their environmentally conscious thoughts and placed them in their first 5 track EP, Waking Up. Theatrical and intense, the entirety of the release could be found in the soundtrack to a romance novel-turned modern major motion picture. Perhaps it’s their location in Malibu that brings the message of the environment to us disguised within sticky sweet pop sounds, either way we’re falling in love with their musicianship while “Waking Up” to the beauty to be lost.
A true love song, “As Always” showcases a raspier, slightly grittier soundscape. It utilizes the metaphor of natural disaster alongside descriptions of other gorgeous scenery to play with the meaning of love and the collective, it seems. Don’t be disappointed that Beyonce doesn’t make an appearance on “Halo”, the song itself is more Coldplay than anything else sonically (fight me). It’s gorgeous, and plays with the meaning of “bad” and “good”.
For some reason, we get quick flashbacks to music from The Cab with the opening of “That Could Be Me”, another clear love ballad that is hopeful and emotional, vocals that rip to your very core. “Kings and Saints” wraps up the EP smartly. It can be classified as a leisurely then powerful self-reflective and, once again, hopeful song, reminiscent of the energy of recent Top 40 releases. (Cough cough nudge nudge.)

If there is a time of year that leaves us longing for an escape, it’s now, trapped in the midst of another endless winter. Matt Messore has delivered the very portal to another world that we’ve been craving with his new bedroom-pop project Cathedral Bells and their debut LP, Velvet Spirit.
Messore recently traded in touring to set up shop in his hometown in Central Florida to record this ethereal DIY project in his bedroom. They just dropped their new single, “Disconnected”, a hypnotic track heavy with layer after layer of ethereal vocals and bright and shimmery guitar.
This dreamy track slowly and smoothly entangles the listener into an echoey lo-fi fantasy that will be sure to make you forget all of your pesky real world troubles. I personally get the urge to lie on the floor of a cool-toned, neon-filled room and stare at a disco ball for several hours. While that may seem like an oddly specific fantasy with major Euphoria vibes, so is this track. As the title suggests, it will leave you feeling almost disconnected from the real world as you become in danger of falling into a shoegazey alternate dimension that you may or may not ever pull yourself out of. Did Messore slip something in my coffee this morning? Guess we’ll never know.
