kodacrome, “play dead”

kodacrome, “play dead”

Electronic-production duo Kodacrome have just released their newest track “Play Dead.” The act – comprised of Elissa LeCoque (vocals/arrangements) and Ryan Casey (synthesizer/production) — combine their passions for music, screenwriting, visual arts, and filmmaking to create the authentic experience that is Kodacrome.

“Play Dead” fits right into their model. The track is synth heavy, with the main focus on the texture of the piece. Once the vocals are eventually introduced, LeCoque creates a light layer to the darkness of the production already present. Kodacrome’s music videos are art-heavy. “Play Dead” depicts an artist as he creates a pottery piece. The dark tone is shown in the lighting as the only feature visible by the light is the artist’s hands and the piece he is creating.

jamie-lee dimes, “release me”

jamie-lee dimes, “release me”

Australian artist Jamie-Lee Dimes released her latest single “Release Me”. This track wrestles with the complexity of trying to fit in as a response to discrimination. “Release Me” is a cathartic track that blends 60’s rock with dreamy melancholic folk.

Dimes also released a video to accompany the track. The music video is a tribute to the beauty of Australia’s natural life in wake of the brush fires that have burned millions of acres of land.

Dimes, a multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter, draws inspiration from artists like Patti Smith, PJ Harvey and Kim Gordon. Dimes writes music for the purpose of igniting conversations and change in order to provide a voice for those who may not have one. Her music style tackles the global perspective with writing fueled by wanderlust.

boy in space, “caroline”

boy in space, “caroline”

Swedish musician Robin Lundbäck, musically known as Boy In Space, has released a new single called “Caroline”. The single has been highly anticipated by fans since Boy in Space teased it on tour last year.
The name Boy in Space itself is highly symbolic to Lundbäck, who uses his musical alter ego as a place to express his darker feelings. Of the moniker, he says “to be “In Space” is to exist in the in-between. It’s not quite the beginning but it’s so far from the end. It’s standing apart from those who’ve found their conventional fit in this world, and recognizing that to be different is special. It’s the courage to depart the familiar to a destination unknown. The “space” is the intensity of youth. The cold sting of heartbreak. The suffocation of betrayal. And the fiery passion of young love”.
The release of “Caroline” is Boy in Space’s first release in 2020 following up a big year in 2019 as he surpassed 35 million streams on Spotify. Of the single, Lundbäck says, “Caroline is that girl that you’re crushing on but is completely out of your league and untouchable,” Robin said noting that, “we all knew a Caroline growing up.”
“Caroline” is the first of three singles set to be released in spring of 2020 and tour dates are to be announced soon.

beabadoobee, “sun more often”

beabadoobee, “sun more often”

Today, indie pop sensation Beabadoobee released the official music video for her track “Sun More Often.” Animated by Elliot Bech, the entirety of the video is a gorgeous black and white cartoon with images alluding to the Space Cadet EP. While she soulfully sings, her words breathe life into your day as she implores you to look at the bright side of things, with lyrics like: “If you try/You’ll see/That the world’s/Not scary as it seems.”

weird milk, “time machine”

weird milk, “time machine”

North London indie-pop band WEIRD MILK release video for newest track “Time Machine”. The video was released in the U.S through Austin, TX label Big Indie. The band consisting of Zach Campbell (guitar, vocals), Alex Griffiths (guitar, vocals), Charlie Glover Wright (drums), Joe ‘Blue’ Moyle (keys), and Harry Zwaig (bass), are moving their way to the front of the indie scene.

The pulsating new track pulls listeners back to the style of Beach Boys in harmonies, and The Strokes in guitar composition. This simple visual of the band standing in the backroom of some establishment while they harmonize, enhances the simplicity and influence of this track. This simplicity is helping them stand out in scene of acts trying to be different, WEIRD MILK strip the indie sound to it’s basic form and elevate it in a way that seems nostalgic.

ciel, “the shore”

ciel, “the shore”

Brighton, UK act CIEL released the lead single “The Shore” off their upcoming album Movement, set to be released this Spring. “The Shore” gives the first glimpse of their dreamy alt-pop world with interwoven guitars, pulsing bass-lines, and intriguing vocal harmonies.

Lead singer Michelle Hindriks describes the song as “feeling stuck in your life and waiting for it to ‘really’ begin; yet at the same time, your realize it’s just an illusion and your life has already begun and you’re living it right now”. Continuing “losing the connection with that essence can feel extremely frustrating”.

Overall, CIEL’s sound is one that feels nostalgic while also being innovative. Bringing both these things together only adds to their mystique.
