British rock band You Me at Six have delivered a moody turned explosion of a track with their newest release, “Adrenaline”. This is to say that the song eases you in with a gentle, soft verse before blowing you away with loud and catchy chorus to ripple through your mind. I can only imagine what it sounds like in a room full of people at a live show. The chorus isn’t nearly the only mind-blowing thing here. The moments leading up to the chorus are a direct contrast to the subsequent parts, with just a vocal and gripping melody to prepare you for what’s to come in the rest of the song.
The song’s dark sound matches the lyrical content to a tee. Appropriately, the listener is taken to the possible dark side of our personalities and the struggle that comes with balancing our thoughts while still being who we are. The sonics of the track amplify this idea, creating a world filled with intense emotions.
Lead singer Josh Franceschi says of the track: “Adrenaline is about understanding & accepting the capacity we all have as humans to have split personalities. Coming to terms with the idea of co-dependency.”

In his new song “Redemption”, Nathaniel Rateliff sings of wanting to escape the ghosts of his past that continue to haunt him. You would be forgiven for thinking that he was actually writing the song about his own life instead of an upcoming movie. The track, which was written for the Apple Original Film, Palmer, takes the listener on an emotional journey, one that is the perfect look into the trials and tribulations of the film’s main character. The movie is a story about trying to live a normal and trouble-free life amidst feeling like everyone around you is working to tear you down, and Rateliff’s yearnful track highlights this perfectly. After watching the recently released trailer, it is clear to see that Rateliff managed to successfully put himself into the shoes of the main character in order to create a compelling addition to an already gripping story.
Rateliff says of how he became motivated to write the track:
When I was first asked to write a song for Palmer I was told what the film was about and where the song was going to be used. The melody and the opening line came to me immediately. But it wasn’t until I had a conversation with Justin [Timberlake] that helped me to put the song together. He said the film was about redemption. I saw that in the characters and did my best to add to the scene in the film.

From Oslo, Norway to Nashville, Tennessee Malin Pettersen seems to be paving the way, around the world, to success. After growing up surrounded by music Pettersen was drawn to American culture and arts, as if it was calling her name. This calling led to the formation of popular country band Lucky Lips where she sings lead vocals. Which finally led to the release of her first solo album in 2018 and a mini-album in 2019, which received praise from big names like Rolling Stone Country and Billboard. Fans of Darling West, Erin Rae and Angel Olsen would love Pettersen, but she has a voice of her own that sounds strong and soft at the same time.
Her next album Wildhorse is set to release October 16. The latest single before the album drops, “Wildhorse Dream”, references the album title. It is filled with layers of instrumentation and graceful harmonies. “I wrote this on a plane. I don’t think it needs any explanation and I think it can probably be different things for different people, but I did want to capture that feeling of “in-betweenness” that at least I specifically get on planes. It’s like a weird philosophical time zone where everything is up in the air,” Pettersen says. Pettersen has one of those styles that you can recognize the second the song begins. “Wildhorse Dream” is a journey back to music made years ago, while keeping it new. It feels like discovering something you haven’t listened to in a while that you will find yourself gravitating back to.

Up-and-coming hip hop artist whiterosemoxie debuted the music video for “west side boys” ahead of the release of his next mixtape. The video premiered on Pigeons & Planes’ YouTube channel and was shot, directed and edited by Jax Anderson. whiterosemoxie and his friends star in the video which is similar to a day-in-the-life of the Detroit native. The track comes off his debut full-length release, white ceilings, and is a reminder that the people around you have to be your foundation, especially in darker times. This idea will come to fruition in his next mixtape, grae ceilings. Although he just finished high school, his lyrics are vulnerable and introspective, which you might not expect from someone his age. After a near-death experience, whiterosemoxie decided to start making music alone in his basement. Now, he is moving up and beginning to collaborate on the song making process with others. There is a slight feeling of anticipation at the beginning of the song, not knowing where the beat is going to go until the drums kick in. The down-tempo track exemplifies his artistry and only adds another layer to his musical identity. Check out “west side boys” and the new music video out now.

Texan singer-songwriter Zachary Knowles found himself drawn to music from a young age when his parents gave him a light-up keyboard in the first grade. He spent his childhood learning songs and then began to write his own, but always kept his creations to himself. When he got older, he ventured to share his songs online, and was pleasantly surprised by the positive reaction he received through tens of thousands of streams on SoundCloud. His new single, “Slow Summer” is a product of this longtime effort, and it shows off Knowles’ skills in the form of a sleepy, feel-good banger.
The bouncy track features light and spirited guitar plucking but also adopts a ballad feel from the tender piano. There’s a subtle dance beat in the chorus, peaceful but stirring, perfect for at night when things are sleepy but you’re not ready to stop moving. Knowles’ vocals are smooth on top of his stripped-back instrumentation, with his touching lyrics depicting how completely at ease he is with the person he’s singing about. As you listen to his voice and the relaxing music, you can’t help but be coaxed into comfort yourself.
Knowles has spent his entire life leading up to this moment, honing his craft and developing his skills. Don’t miss out on giving him the appreciation he deserves, and enjoy the drowsy bop that is “Slow Summer” for yourself.

Tomberlin announced a new EP, Projections, with the lead single “Wasted”. The track is out with a Busy Philipps-directed video (Yes, you read that right!), from an iPhone in quarantine, that was shot and edited by Marc Silverstein. The song is an uptempo journey about a relationship that withholds as much as it gives. The video captures the innocence in the lyrics, creating a hauntingly beautiful atmosphere. Tomberlin shines bright in a neon green dress following the journey of a day in the life of two young best friends. The scenery around the subjects of the video changes naturally, not overdoing the simple concept of it all. It’s as if she is reflecting back on these times with her best friend, remembering and trying to keep up with all the things they did together.
On the subject of the video and song, Sarah Beth Tomberlin says:
‘Wasted’ was the most fun song to record. I brought the song with the guitar part and knew I wanted drums, but wasn’t sure what kind of beat I wanted. Alex played this drum beat for me and was all ‘kinda left field but maybe this would be cool.’ It took the song to a whole new level. Sad song or summer banger? You tell me. The video was made with the help of Busy Philipps (who directed) and Marc Silverstein (who shot it), who are more like family than friends at this point. I was quarantined with them and their girls in South Carolina and we came up with the idea and shot it in about 4 days on an iPhone.
The “Wasted” music video truly feels like the fleeting memories of a childhood summer. The ending of the video, when the day comes to an end, connects all the emotions with the two looking towards each other. It’s simple, beautiful and then gone in an instant. The song and EP were co-produced by Alex G (Alex Giannascoli) and bandmate Sam Acchione. Following her critically acclaimed 2018 debut, Tomberlin continues to prove she is a force to be reckoned with. Check out the video for “Wasted” now.
