Who doesn’t love “Weird Al” Yankovic? Seriously, it’s impossible. The Grammy award-winning comedy/parody musician has brought joy to the hearts of millions for five decades and continues to be a singular presence in music. Al has spent a decade-long hiatus from new releases, with his last being 2014’s smash hit album Mandatory Fun. Though this hasn’t stopped him from touring and working on new projects unrelated to music, such as 2022’s parody biopic Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. However, he’s finally made a return to recording with his new single and animated music video, “Polkamania!” The track continues a long-time trend for him, as almost all of his studio albums have contained a medley of then-popular songs covered in the style of overly jaunty polka music.
Let’s face it: you should already know if this is something you’ll enjoy. “Weird Al” Yankovic is so iconic and beloved to where you’ll likely be on board before even knowing what the song is. And “Polkamania!” is as gleefully silly as “Weird Al” has ever been, showing that he’ll always stay true to goofiness and idiocy no matter what. The songs chosen to cover were big hits from the past ten years. These include: “Bad Guy” by Billie Eilish, “Hello” by Adele, “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” by Lin-Manuel Miranda from Disney’s Encanto, “Vampire” by Olivia Rodrigo, “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X, “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee, “Shape of You” by Ed Sheeran, “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars, “WAP” by Cardi B ft. Megan Thee Stallion, “thank u, next” by Ariana Grande, and “Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift. Phew!
The track is continuously jaunty and upbeat polka music, featuring Al’s signature accordion playing as well as a brass section for authenticity. It should appeal to fans of the songs covered or just fans of Yankovic in general. “Polkamania!” had its release coupled with an accompanying music video, which is completely worth watching too. It features several animators styling each part of the medley and has just enough sight gags and quirky humor to be a total delight. The animation is super dazzling, ranging broadly in style from 2D animation, CG, puppetry, stop-motion, and work I don’t even know how to describe.
All in all, this is an entirely satisfying comeback for “Weird Al” Yankovic, even if this is just a one-off single and not leading into a new album. Any amount of silliness from him is needed at any time or place, and he remains a massive icon in both the worlds of comedy and music.
In Jean Ryden’s music video for her song “Parallel Universe”, Jean desperately wants the trauma of losing her parents to have never occurred. In the beginning of the song, she replays images of her parents in her mind in black and white, because her past is like an old movie; the happy moments with her parents are covered with feelings of dread. All the color has been depleted from her memories because new movies are symbolic of new, happy memories with her parents being formed. In comparison, the old movies symbolize her happy memories as only in the past
Jean lays in her bed and leans her head to the side, which reflects when she would lean on her parents for support. She is alone in the bed because after her parents passed away, she felt alone and like she had nobody to lean on for support. The camera zooms in on a close-up image of her eyes while she lays in her bed because her eyes are her pathway to all of the loneliness she feels inside.
Color film of a garden with beautiful roses of different shades and a white bird flying above it is representative of her healing from her grief and finding peace. To elaborate, the bird symbolizes her flying because she is freeing herself from the black and white space of her grief.
Images lasting for a few seconds, all of her memories can never be remembered in complete detail, but the most important details remain engraved. The colored images represent her purely happy memories, the black and white images are symbolic of her memories remembered in sadness or trigger her grief, and the partially colored images are memories she is remembering to heal from her grief and sadness.
The same image of her alone, opening and closing her eyes, leaning her head against a wall, in a vacant room, occurring for a few seconds, repeatedly, shows her constant despair. She shuts off all of her memories with or of her parents because she goes into a state of depression, which she is constantly battling to escape from.
The video ends with her sitting in a dark room with candles and a black sky lit with bright stars. Images are played in quick seconds against Jean’s soft, melodic voice, which has a deeply sad tone on its edges along with hints of desperation. Her voice also has another tone, that feels like she is going through feelings of clarity.
Once she repeats her memories filled with many different emotions, she must admit that the reality is her parents are in heaven. Therefore, her memories are a “parallel universe.”
Finnish art-rock artist GEA drops her lead single “Despite” off her upcoming album Call for a Snake. The track starts out smooth and continues to build, growing stronger. As she travels through the forest, with dense trees and flowing rivers, GEA seems to go through an awakening. We are taken on a journey, but in the end GEA walks away despite her troubles.
“We are experiencing an unusually tough period of uncertainty, fear, and loss. I hope with this song we can celebrate our beautiful journey on earth regardless of our troubles,” GEA explained.
The track comes from a part of the album that is dedicated to the spirit of the swan, a representation of grace and elegance, an iconic figure in Finnish folklore. As the first single of the new album GEA sets the tone, a call for transformation and guide to healing the soul.

YemiAlade. You may know the Nigerian sensation as the first female African artist to reach 100 million plays on youtube with her hit song “Johnny” in 2014. If not, you may know her as a contributor to Béyonce’s album The Lion King: The Gift. If neither of these accomplishments ring a bell, then let her new song “Boyz” be your gateway into this remarkable MTV Africa Music Award winner. Of Yoruba and Igbo descent, Yemi produces vibrant Afropop music for the world to enjoy. “Boyz” is groovy and bouncy, and Yemi’s enthralling vocals and melodies are supplemented by an unwavering beat. The beat is passed around between voices– the bass, drums, and even Yemi’s vocals. No matter where the beat is, however, it’s constant and driving, transfixing the listener. Yemi also adds a unique touch by using drums to ornament the song here and there rather than simply having them keep the beat.
Created with collaborator Vtek, this upbeat pop gem is just a taste of Yemi’s impending album. A video for “Boyz” is on the horizon as well. In the meantime, you can check out her other four albums: King of Queens, Mama Africa (The Diary of an African Woman, Black Magic, and Woman of Steel. As an acclaimed trailblazer for African music, Yemi’s music is a treasure and unquestionably worth checking out.
Former singer/songwriter of Austin’s Black Forest Fire, Jay Tonne, has a new indie project, aptly named Tonne. Tonne has just released his new single “Catalina” from his upcoming four song EP, Bridey Murphy.
Post Black Forest Fire, Jay moved to Denver and pursued an education, and despite having little free time and no band, continued to make music. When he attempted to write new material he kept coming back to the sounds and melodies that became the EP. He recorded the four-song work at Fort Collins’ own The Blasting Room studio and worked with producer Jason Livermore. He recruited new bandmates and their first show as Bridey Murphy will correspond to the release of the EP this spring.
The song’s sound is a blast from the past, giving off strong 90’s indie rock vibes. The melodic track is poppy in that somber way that was characteristic of the time. Tonne’s vocals are light and sweet but with an underlying layer of attitude and earnestness that provides a nice contrast to the guitar-driven instrumentals.
“Catalina” is out everywhere now and Bridey Murphy is set to release this spring.
New York-based multi-instrumentalist Jason Bemis Lawrence is preparing to release his full-length, Another Hotel Hallway, early next month. In the meantime, we have the second single off of that collection ready for your awaiting ears, a track called “Southern Midwest”. The reverb-filled track has an almost glassy feel to it, serene in its disposition. The instrumentals lend to the tranquil feel, allowing for a relaxing soundscape intro to an album we are all too excited for.
RF Shannon just released their latest single “Tooth Ache”, which is off of their latest album, Trickster Blues, due out May 5th. “Tooth Ache” pays tribute to all things alternative-indie, but also throws in a western vibe. The intro gives us that western sound with an acoustic guitar, slow drums, and sounds of a classic piano. “I take it slow right in the back road,” hums the band.
Aside from the amazing instrumentals, the vocals are haunting and will capture you. My favorite thing about “Tooth Ache,” is its ability to put a new twist on a classic rock sound. Shane Renfro, of the band says, “I tend to feel like all is right in the world when I’m slowly driving down old country roads with the windows down, so this song is kind of an ode to that vibe. I wanted to write a good backroad song.” A vibe we have all felt, RF Shannon encompasses the feeling on “Tooth Ache.”
Three friends – Sarah Jarosz, Aofie O’Donovan, and Sara Watkins – banded together at the infamous Telluride Festival after they jumped on stage and performed a song for the first time. Since that moment on, it was clear that their paths would be forever intertwined on a bright future in the music industry, and together they make up the musical trio I’m With Her. See You Around is out today.
Together, these three have produced music that seems to have several undertones from many different genres of music. Instead of sounding incoherent, however, they have spun each sound and rhythm together with the highest skill of artistry. Not only are there several songs with a folk-ish feeling, but also of country and bluegrass. The album features breathtaking harmonies and fine-spun narratives that gives this group a very unique sound and feel. From Telluride to total success as a band, these three friends have a bright future in changing how the world looks at music.
