Their new single, “It’s Undeniable”, out May 23rd, is the equivalent of both a pep talk and an existential crisis at once. And honestly? That balance feels about right.
“It’s Undeniable” is loud in the best way. It’s raw, it’s full of distortion, and it barrels forward like a train that may or may not be on the tracks anymore. Which, to be fair, might be the most accurate depiction of how life feels in 2025. It’s a song for driving too fast or dancing in the living room, blending lo-fi garage fuzz with a driving rhythm and a vocal delivery that teeters between frantic and hopeful. It captures that exhilarating mix of chaos and clarity that makes us feel truly alive.
But the chaos is calculated. This is the latest release from DECK, Hallelujah The Hills’ wildly ambitious 54-song project that spans four albums and reimagines what an “album” can even be. Each record corresponds to a suit in a deck of playing cards, and if that sounds intense, it’s because it is. But it’s also fun. Conceptual. Weird in the best way. “It’s Undeniable” functions as both a punchy standalone and a breadcrumb on a trail that promises to twist, burn, and break expectations before building them back up again.
Frontman and author Ryan H. Walsh leads the band through this musical labyrinth with the confidence of someone who’s read every instruction manual, thrown it away, and decided to build something better anyway. Hallelujah The Hills doesn’t just write songs, they build experiences. And this one? It’s fiery and fast and full of life, even in its most unhinged moments.

Bracing for the impact of their sophomore album “Couple(t)s,” independent North Carolina duo Couldn’t Be Happier – expertly comprised of soulmates Jordan Crosby Lee and Jodi Hildebran Lee – share supportive and audibly satisfying single “I Got You.” The lyrics are encouraging, something to send to a friend or family member that may be going through a hard time. Because life is hard enough as it is, and this duo has no problem acknowledging that.
The song itself is truly upbeat, so even lines like “screw your parents, you don’t need them to approve” feel light and supportive. Of the song, the band explains:

In unfortunate timing, this is my *37th* article for this website. Just one off, huh? Anyway, indie-psychedelic band 36? have put out a new single titled “i don’t want to go out tonight”. This is the fourth single to come from the Calgary-based group this year, after “wasted”, “FEERS”, and “ART”; with their latest LP being 2022’s Naturally. Their sound is an eclectic mix of sources, with influences ranging from hazy alt-pop and art rock, and comparisons to bands like Animal Collective or even Bleachers. Many of their lyrics, from the band’s producer and songwriter Taylor Cochrane, deal with personal subjects awash in sincerity and emotional qualities.
“i don’t want to go out tonight” is more laid-back than their more recent singles, with an indie-folk sound led by Hawaiian-sounding acoustic guitar and a breezy beach atmosphere. It’s very sweet sounding with a heartfelt performance from Cochrane and cutesy backing vocal harmonies. It also features a wonderfully abrasive guitar solo characteristic of a lot of their work, though it still fits against a different musical backdrop. Lyrically, it’s a tribute to introversion and taking time for yourself even when it means avoiding energy-draining social activities. The lyrics and the music match perfectly, creating a vibe throughout the track that’s cozy and comforting. 36? have crafted a great summer single in “i don’t want to go out tonight”, a song that’s drenched with both positive energy and relaxation.
The band is currently on tour throughout North America, with more music still in the works.
Despite their recognition being mainly limited to the UK, I love Glasgow-based rock band Primal Scream. Part of the group’s appeal is their wide range of playing styles and music genres. Starting out as an indie-pop band with almost no traction, they reached massive levels of success with 1991’s Screamadelica, which broke musical boundaries by combining their sound with dub, psychedelia, and acid house into something entirely their own. It’s still considered their magnum opus and remains a cultural landmark in both the UK’s indie-rock and rave scenes. Despite their huge new audience, they still continued to push themselves in wildly new directions with their following releases. These include 1994’s blues pastiche Give Out But Don’t Give Up, 1997’s experimental Vanishing Point, and 2000’s blaring industrial-noise-dance epic XTRMNTR. Recently, Primal Scream put out the lead single for their upcoming 12th LP, Come Ahead, titled “Love Insurrection”. This comes eight years after their last release, 2016’s Chaosmosis.
“Love Insurrection” is based on nostalgia in a few ways. The cover for both the single and album is a vintage photograph of Robert Gillespie Sr., father of lead vocalist Bobby Gillespie. I believe this is to relate to the 60s both visually and lyrically, as the lyrics talk about political and social turmoil. Musically, it’s a bit of a throwback to the sound that Primal Had on Screamadelica, featuring a funky “Madchester” shuffle beat, psychedelic wah-wah guitars, and breezy percussion and flutes. However, it keeps the sound fresh by adding influences from 70s soul, with a lush string section reminiscent of seminal artists like Curtis Mayfield who also addressed social consciousness in their work. As usual, the backing vocalists provided by the band give the music a soulful, almost gospel-type feel, not unlike previous Screamadelica singles “Movin’ On Up” or “Come Together”.
The single’s release comes with both a 6-minute full version and a shortened edit at 3 ½ minutes. Both versions are perfectly adequate depending on the type of listener you are, but I definitely recommend the longer cut if you’re willing to ride the groove as the song climaxes in a way that’s both beautiful and groovy. As it stands, “Love Insurrection” is a perfect song for psychedelic raves or summer beach parties, and signals a possible return to form from Primal Scream.
A band that’s recently popped up on my radar is the LA-based indie/electronic duo Pop Noir, led by Manchester-born brothers Joe and Luke McGarry. Several influences inform their sound, namely vintage dance-rock acts like New Order, Primal Scream, and Depeche Mode, as well as more modern house/techno inspirations. While the band has been intermittently active for years, it’s been more of a side project as the two focus on other exploits, with their main pursuits being illustration/animation for Luke and filmmaking for Joe. However, new singles by the pair have been more consistently released in the past year, with their slickly produced cover of U2’s “New Year’s Day” and a ska-throwback titled “Santa Ana”.
Their newest single released earlier this month, titled “Soul Train”, expands on the band’s diverse musical trajectory while remaining lively and danceable. While previous singles like “White Jazz” were more uptempo and obvious in their highly danceable retro-rave influences, “Soul Train” diverts a bit from the band’s usual repertoire. It still has an enjoyable sound, but focuses more on introspection and vulnerability in the lyrics and performances. Luke McGarry’s vocals, clearly echoing Bernard Sumner, have more range that he didn’t get to explore on previous singles. He’s allowed to bring his voice to a falsetto on the chorus and even some crooning here and there, showcasing more of his talents. Musically, this has more of an emphasis on a killer big-band horn section and orchestral elements as opposed to the synths and drum machines that characterized their other work. It’s entirely unique and brings out the more dramatic qualities that the song is going for.
As of now, “Soul Train” doesn’t have any connection to a future EP or LP and currently serves as a standalone single. Still, it shows the duo as worth looking out for as they continue their still-young musical journey.

Chamber-rock indie band Cloud Cult from St. Cloud, Minnesota has just released their newest song “The Universe Woke Up As You” and it is a philosophical masterpiece. The song consists of Craig Minowa as the band’s lead vocalist and songwriter, Jeremy Harvey on the drums, Shannon Frid-Rubin on the violin, Sarah Perbix and Aurora Minowa as backup vocals, and Daniel Zamzow on the cello. Minowa recorded the song in the midst of a divorce, in the Wisconsin woods. Minowa was able to process his grief through music and regain control over his perspective on life with this song.
“The Universe Woke Up As You” came out as part of their Alchemy Creek album, due to come out on August 8th. This full-length studio album is made possible by Earthology Records, the band’s own record label created by Minowa himself. A really interesting fact is that Cloud Cult’s efforts to create music, advertise their band, and tour in the most sustainable ways possible have earned them a spot in “Top 10 Green Bands” by Rolling Stone in 2009.
Both the melody and lyrics of the song are melancholic and very reminiscent of the past. The feminine background vocals provide wonderful harmony to Minowa’s soft-spoken singing. In the end, a beautiful violin solo pulls the song to a close. In my opinion, the musicality of this song reminds me of Foster the People’s “Pumped Up Kicks”, mirroring its soothing vocals which convey a surprisingly depressing message. This 5-minute song is a great way to wind down after a long, hard day.
At the beginning of the song, Minowa can be heard whispering the intro, which makes the intended audience and all who listen feel small. The lyrics tell a story of hopeless nostalgia. Minowa reminisces about simpler times when he was a kid, and implies that things are much more difficult now as an adult having to deal with this “skull-sized hell.” Personally, my favorite verse of the song is:
Gonna draw myself a picture of the way things were What is real and what is fantasy? Well, I really can’t be sure There’s so much here to feel, well, it’s all just a blur Gonna draw myself a picture of the way things were
By the end, Minowa explodes into something bigger as he yells the title of the song “Today the universe woke up as you!” This piece depicts an interesting message of how one can control one’s own perception of time, space, and reality.
The accompanying music video starts with Minowa in front of a camcorder. It is apparent that the set takes place in some type of storage unit, giving the video a quickly-made unplanned feel. Behind him is the back of a garage door; on the camcorder screen, however, it is clear that the video editors have added a green screen to the background. The family-friendly vibe of the song is enforced by children acting as a film crew. For what seems low-budget, this video is a perfect visual for the song. “The Universe Woke Up As You” can be watched on YouTube here.

With it still being peak summer music season, it’s a perfect time for pop-sensation Kesha to put out a song like “Joyride”, her comeback single released this July 4th. Despite Independence Day being known as a quintessential day for pool parties, barbecues, and American patriotism, Kesha’s choice to release the single then has a deeper meaning to it. “Joyride” is a representation of her own freedom and independence, as she begins a fresh start in her career as an independent artist with her own label and a new management team. This also marks the first release since last year’s settlement of a well-publicized defamation lawsuit with former producer Dr. Luke, a legal battle that took her away from popular music for many years.
The new single is a throwback to her earlier hits, like “Tik Tok” and “Die Young”, with a more anthemic and loose party vibe. It comes as a surprise considering the more introspective direction she has been taking her music recently, as seen in 2017’s “Praying” and last year’s Gag Order album. Still, it’s a welcome return to that sound and recalls 2000s EDM songs by Lady Gaga and Britney Spears, the latter of which also has received support in recent years following legal issues. The track’s production helps this semi-throwback vibe through producer Zhone who also worked on Troye Sivan’s smash dance single “Rush” last year.
Okay, enough background details. Is the song any good? The answer to that is, if you’re a Kesha fan or someone who only knows a few hits, “Joyride” perfectly brings back her original sound while still seeming fresh and exciting in its own right. Describing the song makes it sound like it shouldn’t work—Kesha going back to the intentionally sleazy, attitude-filled style of her early work, but musically with heavy use of polka accordions throughout and dramatic choir singing on the chorus. Really. Yet the campiness and bold sincerity of the track is what’s so appealing about it, even if it might be initially off-putting to some listeners. The house-inspired sound is danceable throughout, with thumping beats and bouncy synths to keep things light and groovy. It has its roots in campy Europop, and it gives off an “ABBA on acid” vibe.
Kesha has described this release as the first time she’s felt free with her career in 20 years, and if this is the unabashedly weird and eclectic direction she wants to go in, I’m all for it. “Joyride” will, hopefully, represent a new era of a pop star who’s ready to reinvent herself in whatever way she pleases.
