There is no other word for it. Sweet Pill took the stage during some of the hottest moments temperature-wise at Riot Fest 2024, and they absolutely dazzled everyone. The stage banter, the outfits, the edge, the poise… somehow everything this band did struck us as charming and unique, though they fit right in with the crowd and the vibrant energy of the day. The crowd begged them to continue playing, and lead vocalist Zayna Youssef admitted they’d love to, but the set cutoff times pulled them off stage much sooner than everyone was ready for.

Douglass Park in Chicago is stunning on an everyday basis. But during Riot Fest? It’s glorious. Littered with photo booths, games, food and drink vendors, shopping experiences, and more surrounding the five stages, Riot Festival does what it can to make sure the attendees are comfortable and part of a grand adventure together. With the Riotland installation — featuring a marketplace, museum, carnival rides, NWA wrestling, the Hellzapoppin Freak Show, and more — this festival provides epic experiences you won’t find elsewhere.
Here are some Day 1 landscape and fan photos to enjoy.
Day one at Newport Folk Festival 2024 was an absolute whirlwind. There were almost too many amazing sets to photograph, and not enough time. Performers included Billie Marten, Petey, Sir Woman, and Wednesday that Friday. Eric Tsurumoto grabbed some quick pics of them all.
American rock outfit The War On Drugs took the stage at Newport Folk Festival on day 2 to an excited audience. The band seemed to really appreciate their circumstance while they began the set, an appreciation that almost rippled through the crowd as well. Eric Tsurumoto caught some highlights for us.
Grammy-winning psychedelic soul outfit Black Pumas dazzled the crowd during the first day of the 2024 Newport Folk Festival. Talented photographer Eric Tsurumoto grabbed some set highlights for us.
It’s no secret that Massachussetts-bred alt-rock outfit — and activist act — Guster is a crowd favorite. Things were no different for the festival crowd at Newport Folk Fest this year, as the band played an energetic set on the coast. Eric Tsurumoto grabbed some photos for us.
Award-winning musician and writer Allison Russell has been bringing her unique blend of magic to the Newport Folk Festival for quite some time. She has performed there in bands and as a solo act now, and is absolutely thrilling to watch. Photographer Eric Tsurumoto grabbed some highlights from her set during Day 1, below.
On May 15th, Kansas City favorite Local Natives made an appearance at The Truman alongside Uwade. Visual artist Jennifer Casida was on-hand to deliver some fun and psychedelic photos of the sold-out event, which took place on a gorgeous, temperate spring evening under a pink midwest sunset.
To round out the month of September – and to unofficially prepare the city for BEY DAY (October 1) – Bishop Briggs and MisterWives brought The Don’t Look Down Tour to Grinder’s in The Crossroads. On a beautiful evening, against the backdrop of a watercolor sunset, Bishop Briggs brought her quintessential high-octane energy to the stage.
With added block visuals and sharp, dominating lighting, her moody vocals swayed the audience into a fiery mood. She rounded out the 16-song set with the notorious hit “River” before whispering a humbled (and cute) “Thank you” to the audience. As she breathed heavily through her bows, her beaming smile could not be contained.
