Having DC-based bands Pretty Bitter and Flowerbomb join forces together on a project weirdly makes sense, which is why their split EP Take Me Out was so exciting to listen to. I’ve written about Pretty Bitter before (here, in a review of their single from January, “Roadkill”), and listening to a handful of Flowerbomb’s songs showed a lot of similarities between both bands, in terms of music and lyrics. Each has an indie sound rooted in throwback alternative rock trends, with obvious influences from grunge and shoegaze. Their songwriting focuses on raw, personal lyricism that draws on the backgrounds and experiences of their members, and the chemistry between each performer in the band is clear in every song or show.

Evan Weiss handled the production of the EP, which is comprised of five songs. It has two original songs from each band and a closer written and performed by both. As Take Me Out starts, it’s apparent that the tracklist was ordered so the songs complement each other. “Never Better” by Pretty Bitter and “Nothing to do with me” by Flowerbomb, the first two songs respectively, have obvious musical similarities and play to the strengths of both artists. Both are mid-tempo rock songs that, through careful production and mixing, have a focus on vocals and lyricism without sacrificing the abrasive guitar playing both bands frequently use. They’re both hugely enjoyable, with “Never Better” functioning as an almost new-wavey rock song, and “Nothing to do with me” being more rhythmic and focused on hard-rock riffs.

As the EP continues, the next pair of songs allows each band to experiment with some interesting genre pairings and new ideas. “youbuiltafinelife” by Pretty Bitter is a buffet of great musical textures, with the highlights being the funky bass playing and the hazy, dreamy atmosphere that comes through the production and keyboard effects. It’s slightly different for Pretty Bitter while still representing their sound. “I Always Knew” by Flowerbomb also combines a lot of ideas, working as a slow-burn indie rock song with grungy guitar distortions and bits of glittery synths. The EP closes on a track both bands worked on together, the title track “Take Me Out”. It’s the most unexpected musical diversion of the whole EP, with a jaunty, folky twang and featuring great steel pedal guitar playing. Both vocalists duet with each other, and they provide a good contrast with Mel Bleker’s soft and sweet vocals against Rachel Kline’s more gruff and dynamic singing. While it may not represent each band particularly well, it’s more emblematic of two groups of talented musicians having fun and creating art for their own sake.


Take Me Out is a hugely enjoyable diversion for both bands and makes one hope for more collaborations between the two in the future. Each group gets the chance to have the spotlight, as well as experiment and try new sounds that may not have fit on another release. Both Pretty Bitter and Flowerbomb recently performed together earlier this month at the Black Cat in DC with no more joint shows currently planned, though it would be shocking if the two didn’t cross paths again soon enough.

There’s nothing like a good alternative rock release, and the self-titled debut EP from Soft No fits that bill entirely perfectly. Soft No came out only last week from the Philly-based band, made up of childhood friends Scott Signorino (guitar), Allie Lannutti (vocals, bass), Austin Lotz (guitar), Jon Martello (drums), and Kate Lowe (keyboard/synth). It features five tracks that were all produced by the band with Mark Watter, who’s done audio engineering work for both Alex G and Hop Along. Soft No has only been together for a little over a year now, with their sound still somewhat loose, with inspirations from several alt-rock subgenres and local Philly music scenes. This includes modern indie rock, 90s grunge, emo, metal, and most prominently – a lot of noisy shoegaze.

All of Soft No’s tracks are well-crafted pieces of noisy, dense, and heavy psychedelia that persistently grab your attention, even if they may lack distinction from each other. For a release that’s only five songs and 16 minutes long, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It functions more as a quick introduction to the band and their talents as opposed to an album that’s more chronological and focused as a full experience. Each track is wonderfully noisy and drenched in layers of instruments and textures. The opener “Keeping Tabs” earns comparison to classic noise rock acts like My Bloody Valentine, with the guitar playing and distortion being consistently impeccable throughout the album. Most of the other songs follow a similar formula with minor differences, such as touches of grunge on “Take Your Word”, metal on “Descender”, and an uptempo garage/punk sound on “Melting Timelines”. The latter tracks are easily my favorites, being just as abrasive as well as enjoyable and fun to rock out to. With a lot of shoegaze and noise rock, the vocals tend to blend into the background, but it feels more intentional here as they function more like an instrument in themselves. I also think the drumming and bass playing are key to many of these songs, as they provide a dynamic rhythm that keeps the songs from becoming too focused on atmosphere. Still, I’d like to hear more of the vocals and lyrics in later releases, even if they’re not what the band currently chooses to emphasize.

Soft No’s debut EP is instantly recommendable to fans of abrasive, heavy alt-rock and shoegaze, and really impressed me as I listened to it. The band’s tight chemistry is center-stage throughout, and I hope they keep working together when creating a more focused LP in the future.

Another band I’ve seen pop up in my socials a bunch is the band grlztoy of the DMV area, made up of Theo Zamani (lead vocals, guitar) and Molly Izer (drums). Their EP green!, released last June, is an assured and confident debut I think is worth listening to for anyone into indie pop/rock.

For a release that’s only 12 minutes long, grlztoy easily establishes themselves with just six tracks. The opener, the title song, is only a minute long but still establishes a calming, slightly psychedelic mood through the guitars and slightly echoed drums. It’s ultimately just an intro to the EP, but it still feels complete. Each song carries the same vibe established in the intro title track, creating a hazy, colorful, summer night atmosphere. 

The next three songs, “spring (untied shoes)”, “say when”, and “wavelength” are all a showcase to both members’ talents. Throughout the album, Theo’s singing is wonderful, clearly inspired by both a lot of 90s and 2010s indie singers, but she still almost equals those obvious influences in her abilities. Her voice is sweet and soft, but is still expressive when it needs to be. She carries a song like “say when” by sounding sweet and romantic in a way that’s earnest and never anything but genuine. Molly’s drumming is also consistently great, giving each song a fun, up-tempo groove. Her style varies neatly from cozy indie rock (“teenage dirtbag”), sort of bluesy (“keychain piano”), to garage power pop (the totally killer “wavelength”). 

Admittedly, the band is still very new and occasionally some songs could use more substance (ex. “keychain piano” being clearly a mess-about band jam but still entertaining) or space to breathe. Still, despite having room to grow, green! is a kind of first release that makes you excited to see where the band will go next.

On Friday, genre-bending duo They Travel at Night – comprised of Chuck Howard and Lou Scanlon – released their debut EP, a 5-track feat named Entropy. Veterans of the industry in their respective rights, Howard and Scanlon’s influence is wide-ranging, a fact that is evidenced by this release, if you weren’t already familiar.

Beginning with the first track “Go On,” you can identify the quirky and endearing ways they enhance their tracks. It begins synth-heavy – like, 80s realm synth-heavy – and blossoms into something that, toned down, just as easily belongs in a 90’s movie. Cymbal-led “Fare Thee Well” changes pace for a while for dramatic effect, and lands more in the “I may belong on one of The O.C. soundtracks” category.

“Moment” begins with a guitar riff worthy of an oughts indie/emo band. The electronic breakdowns at 1:42 and 2:42 are really fun, I’m not sure how anyone could get through this song without a smile on their face. “Into It” builds dramatically, a ballad-like track that could, in my humble opinion, easily find its way to a Broadway musical. Entropy lands on “Colors,” an instrumental track that feels celebratory and squared to welcome success. I feel privileged to welcome false spring with this release in my back pocket.

Pip Millett, the Manchester-born singer-songwriter, is ready to release her EP Motion Sick to an eager R&B audience.  

Speaking on the EP, Pip states: “I have often felt lost when things around me have started to change. In recent times I’ve realized I’m simply ‘Motion Sick’. My core self is still there but without change there cannot be any growth. ‘Motion Sick’ is about the various changes in my life. With this change I have tried to find comfort in the simple things.”

Each of the songs on Motion Sick has a sound that harken back to an earlier time in music, but the song lyrics are very much topical. Pip Millett may have been creating songs that reflected changes in her life, but she is certainly in touch with what is important to others in her generation as well. Additionally, she has a voice quality that invites you to really feel what she is singing. The best examples of this are on “Best Things” and “Sad Girls” ft. Gaidaa.

“Running” ft. Ghetts is the first track on the EP and addresses the racist current that runs through our world. Intertwining Pip’s haunting lyrics with Ghetts’ raps, “Running” is an R&B anthem for our time:

One of our favorite singer/songwriter extraordinaires – alt-folk artist EVVAN – has released a dreamy new 5-track EP, Home, and we’re certain it warrants a listen from music lovers of all genres. Never have we felt so much attitude without a hard blues influence in a folk track as we did with the initial track “Wolf.” (Wolf tracks are our favorite though. ;))

Second track “I’m Not Done Yet” is delivered with the fervor you expect from someone who is fully prepared for the next chapter of their lives. “So many times in my life I’ve heard the exact phrases I wrote in the song from friends who’ve experienced the same, from people who I thought were friends and didn’t accept me, from absolute strangers on the street who noticed I was different,” says EVVAN. “It is exhausting, and while there are times I feel beaten down and without hope, I remember this is who I am, and I should be proud of that.”

A track born from the emotions around wanting to come out, Evvan carries intense emotion with each word delivered, creating a beautiful ballad that feels like a torch held by and for all of those who feel other at times. If nothing else, this track is a testament to the artful soul of its creator.

“Hurricane” comes at a more steady clip, as EVVAN details a tumultuous relationship situation. “Falling Over You” speaks to a similar relationship, as the thoughts early in a relationship take over and confuse the hell out of our protagonist. Undoubtedly, this is a highly relatable track for the listeners. It’s also got a beautiful cadence that is absolutely captivating.

The title track rounds out this new release, more simplistic instrumentally than its predecessors, just as impactful. It really is the most freeing way to end the collection. Our favorite botanist Mike McFadden (vocals) and his incredible bandmates are releasing their full-length in three parts. Of the project, he admitted: “We had this patchwork of songs that had never quite fit on other projects and when we looked at them all together, we realized that the songs told a story.” This is Part One of An Album Called Animal Years is the first installment, and was just released.

Comprised of five tracks, it truly ignites magic in the air as it picks up pace, McFadden’s vocal control and manipulation something otherworldly from the very first notes, 7 seconds into the first track “What I’m Fighting For.” And relatable from that very moment as well, with the first line “I’ve been so lost in the world that I used to know” something that pretty much anyone can understand, especially post-pandemic life. This song has the energy of an anthem, and that feels right for now.

“Let You In” is definitely a low-key country ballad that teeters on theatrical in a captivating way, while “Talkin’ To You” is a more hard-hitting love song. There is a bit of an attitude to the instrumentation in the track, the true twine holding each piece together residing in the soulful vocals provided by three-part harmony and admirable vocal range. So much talent in one collection of music, it’s almost not fair.

“Haines St. Station” slows everything down to the most bluesy, beautiful pace we have heard in quite a while. A song that discusses boundaries, insecurities, and doubts in an open environment, it feels a bit cathartic to enjoy this track in particular. And then the trio brings it home with a very inspiring track, upbeat and quite sticky sweet “Nobody Can Stop Me.” We’re fans, and we’re going to keep that one in our back pocket for the strange moments when we stumble. The energy is invigorating.

There are always tons of artists putting out new music every day, but what makes someone stand out from the crowd? Their ability to put themselves into their music. Up-and-coming artist MalikOnMusik did just that with his debut EP Sparring Sessions. The EP consists of six tracks that show the Philadelphia native’s true vocal ability and music ventures. With inspiration from artists like Whitney Houston, Kehlani, and John Legend, MalikOnMusik is ready to pave his own path.

It’s always hard to start out an album because most people tend to judge a book by its cover. “Don’t Think Too Much” and dive into this EP. The track is your first impression and you easily can appreciate his vocals. Followed up by “I.W.M.H.B”, which stands for I want my hoodie back, one of the singles off the EP is based on his real experiences. The production on this track could be the best out of this collection of songs. Each of the songs is different in its own way, but one thing that remains the same is the quality of MalikOnMusik’s vocals. With a similar sound to Miguel, his voice floats effortlessly from start to finish.

In his most personal track, “Consolation”, the pop/R&B artist goes deep into his life. We take a look into his soul and how he is all about being real. “Kicks (Bruce Lee)” and “Me And My Musik” have beats that will get you vibing with all your friends. Although the two aren’t very similar, they somehow seem to fit together and each chorus could easily get stuck in your head. “Saw You In My Dreams” has the most pop elements and stands out from the rest. All the elements in this track fit together just right and give off a happy vibe, a fitting ending to the EP.

These six tracks are what set him apart from other artists in the genre. He is honest and putting his all into his dreams, and it shows. Step out of your comfort zone and check out an artist like MalikOnMusik, who you might not have listened to before.

cady groves, bless my heart

There’s something so incredible about the connection of an artist to their work, and then the work’s fans to that artist. The announcement of the death of indelible singer-songwriter Cady Groves at the tender age of thirty this spring has left a large demographic of both pop/punk fans and country aficionados floored. I, myself, remember the days when she toured with punk banks and I requested her haircut at the salon. (College was a trip, and she has always been gorgeous.) Seeing her name in headlines in my social media feed made my heart stop, and I haven’t heard much of her more recent work. But the world has been celebrating her all along, and her fandom has been wrecked over the news.

Cady spent the last four years of her life writing and preparing new music in Nashville that both reflects her personal experiences, and makes her even more relatable than before. Her EP Bless My Heart was released at the end of May posthumously, and she couldn’t have hit the mark more if she tried.

With a little whimsy, she approaches the collection with the first track “Bartender,” a quirky, honest, beautiful ballad to the carefree nature of a full bar on a hot summer night. Perhaps the reality of political unrest and pandemic make this song feel that much more nostalgic, because we actually felt ourselves tearing up, listening to a song about drinking. The title track comes in quick to justify the tears, however, as Cady addresses personal anecdotes and makes us feel that even those who fall – hard – have the opportunity to be blessed in life. She rips any wounds wide open in this track, and this vulnerable side is going to be the thing we miss most.

“Camo” seems to have a title that is very stereotypical – and perhaps widely indicative – of its audience, but the metaphor prevails as a gorgeous reminder to make yourself seen. “Cigarettes and Sunsets” takes on a rhythm and pace that lure us into the thought that we might be about to watch 1996 blockbuster hit Phenomenon. (That is not an insult in the slightest. We imagine this track sounds like the perfect amalgamation of Clapton-style guitar and the Northern California cowboy demographic that surrounded the cast of Phenomenon during filming. But I digress.) Either way, the track belongs in a film. (Do you hear that, sync friends?!)

Last track “Crying Game” visits personal anecdotes, and reminds us a bit of earlier Cady Groves’ work sonically. The song specifically addresses the deaths of two of her brothers (Casey and Kelly), and the emotions that come along with their memories. It all feels like a way to round back to the beginning, as she takes her final, audible, bow.

To feel as though you have witnessed an entire career in just five songs seems a bit cheesy. But this release makes us feel closer to Cady than ever before.
