bravo, “skyfall”

bravo, “skyfall”

Life has dark corners and crevices that aren’t always easy to navigate. But — with a sense of empathy and open-mindedness to the darkness and the people around you — it can be incredibly rewarding. Up-and-coming pop/R&B extraordinaire Bravo effortlessly displays this in the new music video for single “Skyfall”. The song itself is smooth and assuring, while the visual provides an interesting and relatable peek into Bravo’s own escape into music. The video is inspirational, sobering yet beautiful, and exactly what we need in as we venture into these cold, dark months.

After all, “we’ll be alright.”

oscar louis, “noodle”

oscar louis, “noodle”

New release “Noodle” from up-and-coming project Oscar Louis totters whimsically between resignation and acceptance. The solo venture of Canadian singer-songwriter Oren Lefkowitz, Oscar Louis blends blog era hip hop with detached chillwave, presenting a placid, steady head-nodder.

While Lefkowitz has explained that “Noodle” touches on tensions between Louis and his father, it stays light, with Lefkowitz’s raspy hum meandering through hip-hop verses over a minimalistic backdrop. Lefkowitz describes the conflict, explaining,

“I began writing “Noodle” after getting into a bad fight with my dad. I had just gotten really drunk at my cousin’s wedding, and ended up puking in front of my parents. This incident opened up a tricky scab rooted in my father’s disapproval of me and my decision to pursue music. “Noodle” is my attempt to show him love regardless.”

“Noodle” is Lefkowitz’s third single, following “Your Call is Important to Us” and “Find a Way,” both released earlier this year. His work has been featured on several Spotify playlists.

…and the black feathers, “scandalous”

…and the black feathers, “scandalous”

For Denver-based garage rockers Danny (vocals, guitar), David (bass, vocals), Chris (drums), and Zach (keys, vocals), running a punk-tinged collective named …And The Black Feathers seems strangely easy. Their new song “Scandalous” brings the kind of high octane energy that this autumn so desperately craved, and the soulful, edgy guitar drives us right into a new troublemaker mindset.

Try to stop us.

spaceface, “panoramic view”

spaceface, “panoramic view”

Memphis-based psych rock outfit Spaceface — comprised of Peter Armstrong, Jake Ingalls, Eric Martin, Matt Strong, Daniel Quinlan, and Miles Young — has produced an intricate and whirring track that we could easily see being played both in a slow motion montage of a romance film, as well as for nostalgic ambiance in shows such as This Is Us. (But we aren’t here for music supervision YET, now, are we?)

We’re big fans of the relaxed vibe that accompanies this track, the high pitched melodies and reverb that makes you feel like you’re melting into the night sky. It’s time to pull those high waisted pants out of hiding and give yourself a chance to let the past inspire you, too.

Keep your eyes peeled for the video premiere this week! Keep up with Spaceface here.

matthew heller, temple moon desire

matthew heller, temple moon desire

If you’re looking for something to add some spice to your autumn flavor (is there really ever enough spice though, really?), look no further than indie musician Matthew Heller‘s new full-length release Temple Moon Desire. This album opens its listeners up to thirteen tracks full of emotion and raw talent. The lyrics are poignant — songs about staying vulnerable and open in a world so full of hate and mystery bring about a necessary reality check –, the songs create a sonic ambiance all their own, and with the last chords come a deep longing for more.

That’s what good music does to you. It reaches into your soul and guts you. Matthew Heller has done this, with an array of tracks that really show off his brilliance as well as his resilience. If only all of us could create such beauty.

zinnia, “requiem”

zinnia, “requiem”

Toronto-based indie synth rock outfit Zinnia may be comprised of Rachael Cardiello, James Burrows, Chris Pruden, Connor Walsh and Mackenzie Longpre, but it feels as though their new track “Requiem” is made up of stardust. With that classic ethereal, synth-infused soundscape that we have come to expect from this act, Cardiello’s vocals serve as an anthemic reminder to the song’s listener. Add this one for a fun, psychedelic boost at your next autumn party, or sink deep into it surrounded by candles as Halloween approaches!

ruby red, “superbloom”

ruby red, “superbloom”

California indie-pop duo Ruby Red have dropped a sultry smooth single that can be described as deeeply vibey. New track “Superbloom” is boiling over with chunky beats and thick bass, suavely melded with nostalgic synth that invites a contemporary indie spin.

Like waking up to an electro-pop disco dream, the first few seconds of “Superbloom” are washed out, before bursting forth into stunning clarity. Wavy, texturizing synths envelop echoing vocals into a hazy vacuum, their syncopation weaving as glittery guitar riffs pepper the remaining space. For all its pleasantries, the song is also lyrically hyperconscious, featuring lines like “I can’t help but feel the heat of the moment controls me / I can’t help but feel like my shoulders are weighed down by truth.”

Not to submit to cliché, but “Superbloom” truly does deftly blend many current musical styles; including chillwave, electro-pop, indie rock, hip hop, and disco. This track is what happens when Toro Y Moi meets Tame Impala – with just a dash of Post Malone-reminiscent vocals – yet it still feels innovative and brand new.

Multi-instrumentalists Daniel Laner and Fernando Fine of Ruby Red have been longtime friends since elementary school, officially forming the band in early 2018. The group released a 5-track EP in 2018 titled “LOVELOCK”, with “Superbloom” as their second single of 2019 following previous release “How It Should Feel”.

jeremy elliot, “the deep end”

jeremy elliot, “the deep end”

This time of year doesn’t often come with epic, robustly-arranged tracks that could serve as intense ballads in our lives. And that’s absolutely fine in most cases, but when we first put our ears on rock musician Jeremy Elliot‘s debut release “The Deep End”, we realized that this was a hole in our 2019 repertoire that previously needed to be filled.

This is the type of song that makes you wonder what Elliot’s voice has been hiding away doing all this time, and also marvel at his attention to detail and affinity for providing goosebump-inducing melodies to his audience. Big, bold, and beautiful.
