oberon rose premieres “no stranger”, talks collaboration style and connecting with the audience

It’s not A Midsummer Night’s Dream, but Oberon Rose might just fulfill all your musical dreams. New England-based Oberon Rose is gearing up to release their sophomore album, Tell Me All About It on their own imprint, ThouART Records, and are dropping their single, “No Stranger” off the record. The trio is composed of Mike Keyes’ drums, Chris Listorti on bass/keys and Tommy Oberon providing guitar and vocals, with songwriting by the band’s namesakes, Tommy Oberon and Rebecca Rose. Says Rose of her writing: “As a lyricist, I want the listener to bring their own experiences to the song, so I like to keep it open. Let the listener decide what it means.”

Between the musical ideas of the trio and Rose has evolved what many call psychedelic pop/rock – but no matter what you want to call it, you’ll like it.

“No Stranger” is a bit of a retro track, with a 70s feel to it. Oberon’s vocals are accompanied by the the evident talent of his band. If Oberon Rose has got one thing down, it’s teamwork – you can tell how well all the members play together from the first notes. “No Stranger” is just a bop, period.

Check out the track below, and continue the fun with our exclusive interview below!

In your online bio, it relates Tommy and Rebecca to Elton John and Bernie Taupin as both have similar song writing relationships. Have you ever seen these two idols as role models?

I wouldn’t say role models but we are fans.  To be clear, we are in no way comparing ourselves to them, it’s just that our method of collaboration is similar.

In order to give your lyrics and song writing the space to allow for people to relate, do you base the lyrics off of personal past experiences?

We like to base the lyrics around universal experiences. Generally, the experience of being human.

What kind of dynamic exists in the creation of music in Oberon Rose?

The dynamic is always different. Sometimes I’ll bring music to Rebecca, and sometimes she’ll bring lyrics to me.

What are your goals for Oberon Rose? Where do you see the band in the near future?

We’re looking forward to playing out as much as possible. We’re currently playing shows in New England, but we hope to do some touring in the near future.

Have you ever thought about expanding your performance locations to the more central or western areas of the United States?

Absolutely. We’re looking forward to getting out that way soon.

Has there ever been a time where you felt connected with an audience above any other time that you have performed in the past?

Connecting with the audience is what it’s all about. With each show, we try to make that connection stronger.

Is there an experience that brought the band together? Or did it just seem to form effortlessly?

I don’t believe anything in music happens effortlessly.  Only after a lot of hard work and determination do things start to fall into place.

Who hasn’t wished to be loved back by someone who never will? Be prepared to find yourself in love with “Love Me Back” by J.D. King.

With an extensive knowledge and musically-attuned upbringing, Los Angeles’ J.D. King brings attention to detail into every aspect of his work. Coming February 2, J.D King’s single “Love Me Back” is not one to miss. Not only is “Love Me Back” a wonderful song, but King is also set to drop the accompanying music video, full of retro eye candy, and we’ve got the exclusive premiere.

“Love Me Back” encapsulates the pangs of unrequited love and doing everything possible to win the affections of a significant other. With nostalgic guitar that brings the listener back to the 70’s, King has really made a treat for the ears, with a video to match – the sort of song you instantly want on repeat. With equal parts effortlessness and evident skill, “Love Me Back” is testament to King’s musical expertise.

Says King of the track:

“Love Me Back” was a subconscious ditty I just came up with while waiting in a car. We recorded it live to tape and it sounded pretty great with just 4 tracks. The film represents the fool who looks to others for love and validation while not yet realizing that love truly comes from within. So, myself acting the fool in this case, gets quite a lickin’ from a carefree wildcat goddess for this misunderstanding. I sort of used a Buster Keaton persona for the acting part which I’ve always wanted to try.  I hope you enjoy “Love Me Back”!

From the guitar solo to King’s soothing, clear vocals, we’re falling for “Love Me Back”, and we think you will too.

rare diagram, “keep me” {premiere}

rare diagram, “keep me” {premiere}

Shot on the expansive and gorgeous Oregon coast and TIllamook State Forest – a beauty captured which the band is very proud of -, Rare Diagram brings us the exclusive premiere of the music video for their single “Keep Me”. The band is expertly comprised of Justin Chase (keys, vocals), Emma Browne (guitar, keys, vocals), Joseph Berman (guitar), Chris Marshall (bass), and Alex Radakovich (drums), and the song itself was written while Emma and Justin (who both make appearances in the video) were traveling in Argentina last year. Delivered mellifluously, “Keep Me” is a song about dealing with passivity in relationships and possesses a bittersweet feeling that only the Oregon coast could capture.

Director Hanna Hagen is the mastermind behind the video’s concept – which was inspired by the 70s vibe to the track itself – a movie-like quality to a tortured and beautiful plot line that could only be achieved by an array of vintage lenses and an incredible Director of Photography (Sean Conley). This video is also the perfect escape for those of us experiencing FOMO about not being able to go on luscious nature hikes in the dead of winter.

Let yourself get lost in this quirky, moving, and mesmerizing video.

Keep your eyes peeled for a record release in late summer 2018 via the band’s Facebook.

Since the September release of his album Diviners and Shivs, Brooklyn-based outlaw folk musician Ardell Jason Shealy Stutts – more commonly referred to by his stage name Rust Dust – has been creating and releasing visuals to go along with the 13-track collection. His latest? A live recording of the man himself playing his track “Wayfaring Stranger” at Silver Springs Farm. Rustic and simple surroundings bring a humble and relatable feel to the experience, Rust Dust’s vocals reassuring in their delivery.

grad party, “pretty boy” {premiere}

Los Angeles-based indie pop duo Grad Party – expertly comprised of Carlo Ladd (keys, vocals) and Ian Bowers (guitars, vocals) – are hitting 2018 hard after the success of their 2017 EP Speak. Though university brought them together – they met when they attended Brown in Rhode Island – it is clearly the music that has kept them thriving together creatively. “Pretty Boy” is calculated in its sound, timid but beautiful from the beginning. The track is vulnerable, yet quirky with its staccato instrumentals, though the message holds true, the lyrics giving light to the meaning of it all. Love who you love. “Pretty boy, don’t you care what they think.”

Be sure to give this track some love in the comments!

kahiem rivera, “throat” {premiere}

kahiem rivera, “throat” {premiere}

East coast rap artist Kahiem Rivera is coming at us today with the premiere of his brand new video for “Throat”. Directed by Benjamin Garst and produced by Gabriel Gomez, the video is a beautiful and rough introspective piece that goes along perfectly with the single’s lyrics. Delivered with clean, artful shots, he sits in a dark room, draped in chains and looking into mirrors requesting that someone tell him how he’s “supposed” to be, as a single lightbulb sways overhead. It feels more like an interrogation, as he seems to be facing his demons alone.

As we all learn to be more introspective and guided in the new year, let this song and this video be a staple to go back to when we are feeling alone and questioning our purpose in life.

kings & associates, “pabla’s grace” {premiere}

Blues/folk/funk group Kings & Associates is starting the new year on the right foot, with a brand new video for their insanely beautiful track “Pabla’s Grace”. Filmed by David Resce, the video showcases the band’s incredible live performance aspect in a soulful, smoky setting that really allows their musicianship to take the forefront. When we got wind that “Pabla’s Grace” is song written in dedication to those suffering the often unspoken cruelty of mental illness, we were floored and inspired at the same time. Says the band, “There’s a dark world called mental illness only overshadowed by social stigmas and ignorance of its realty and effects. Living without the ability to trust your own actions is a reality many people have to bear. But we call them home.”

Let Kings & Associates take the stigma from the conversation, and let your ears become enveloped in a song that is smooth like honey, and just as comforting.

the hell yeah babies, “grenadine nosebleeds” {premiere}

the hell yeah babies, “grenadine nosebleeds” {premiere}

Garage rock/power pop collective The Hell Yeah Babies – comprised of Mike Pfeiffer, Julian Ames, Dylan Roth, and Sam Paxton – might call Astoria, New York home, but we’re thinking that just might change if they continue in the direction they’ve been going. Their first release was just last year, and they’ve already developed

We always talk about how songs make us feel like we’re a part of New York City nightlife, but “Grenadine Nosebleeds” was actually written about New York City nightlife. While the band croons “I don’t wanna go home,” we get lost in surf-like guitar riffs that somehow – mysteriously – make us feel like we’re dancing around the city in the summertime. Which is quite a departure from the cold, winter vibes we’ve been tripping all over as of late. It’s got this anthemic feel to it, and by the end of it you feel like you’re claiming your own dance territory in the face of opposition.

Aggressive, beautiful, fun.

“Grenadine Nosebleeds” is out now. Keep up with The Hell Yeah Babies here.
