Since their debut Shifty in 2015, shy kids have truly found their niche in creating music that is a mash up of old and new. Recently, they have released their second full length album, in a state which is sure to catch the attention of fans and critics alike. This success, however, was preceded by another path that eventually led them to where they are now. Originally, this wily quartet found their start in the animation and filmmaking industry. Things took a sharp turn when they realized that their boyhood dreams were turning into more of a nightmare. From pain and heartache grew the desire to write songs that addressed the current mental and physical states of each of the band members.
Coming from a visual background has aided this group and the transition of switching from a visual to vocal spectacle did not phase them whatsoever. In fact, these skills magnified their ability to make music and produce sonic sounds that have since become their signature. This new album has been a solidified their sound in the minds of their fans around the country. Now that they have all this experience under their belts, there is no telling what they have in store for us in the near future.

BAUM celebrates her body with her latest single “This Body.” The L.A. artist and current undergrad of USC’s music program calls on inspiration for her “This Body” through her experiences with an eating disorder and being cat called. I love hearing sassy songs, but some of my favorite lines include “Scare me by saying I’m sexy, I’ll never kiss you”, “…don’t call me Barbie, does it look like I own a fucking thing in pink?” and the best one in my opinion is “This body, this body, my home, my home.” With its upbeat tune and powerful message, “This Body” will have you ready to take on the world.

Electro R&B artist Hoodlem just released their newest single “Teenager”. What I thought was going to be an upbeat pop song is, in fact, a slow yet sultry track. While the title implicates “teenage love,” the song is about growing older and having that feeling. We at one point have experienced that “crush” feeling, which you may think go away as you get older but it doesn’t. Whether you’re 25 or 55, when you meet someone new, you still get that feeling. Hoodlem’s “Teenager” encapsulates that feeling in one lyric “I wanna know all about you.”

It’s not A Midsummer Night’s Dream, but Oberon Rose might just fulfill all your musical dreams. New England-based Oberon Rose is gearing up to release their sophomore album, Tell Me All About It on their own imprint, ThouART Records, and are dropping their single, “No Stranger” off the record. The trio is composed of Mike Keyes’ drums, Chris Listorti on bass/keys and Tommy Oberon providing guitar and vocals, with songwriting by the band’s namesakes, Tommy Oberon and Rebecca Rose. Says Rose of her writing: “As a lyricist, I want the listener to bring their own experiences to the song, so I like to keep it open. Let the listener decide what it means.”
Between the musical ideas of the trio and Rose has evolved what many call psychedelic pop/rock – but no matter what you want to call it, you’ll like it.
“No Stranger” is a bit of a retro track, with a 70s feel to it. Oberon’s vocals are accompanied by the the evident talent of his band. If Oberon Rose has got one thing down, it’s teamwork – you can tell how well all the members play together from the first notes. “No Stranger” is just a bop, period.

In your online bio, it relates Tommy and Rebecca to Elton John and Bernie Taupin as both have similar song writing relationships. Have you ever seen these two idols as role models?
I wouldn’t say role models but we are fans. To be clear, we are in no way comparing ourselves to them, it’s just that our method of collaboration is similar.
In order to give your lyrics and song writing the space to allow for people to relate, do you base the lyrics off of personal past experiences?
We like to base the lyrics around universal experiences. Generally, the experience of being human.
What kind of dynamic exists in the creation of music in Oberon Rose?
The dynamic is always different. Sometimes I’ll bring music to Rebecca, and sometimes she’ll bring lyrics to me.
What are your goals for Oberon Rose? Where do you see the band in the near future?
We’re looking forward to playing out as much as possible. We’re currently playing shows in New England, but we hope to do some touring in the near future.
Have you ever thought about expanding your performance locations to the more central or western areas of the United States?
Absolutely. We’re looking forward to getting out that way soon.
Has there ever been a time where you felt connected with an audience above any other time that you have performed in the past?
Connecting with the audience is what it’s all about. With each show, we try to make that connection stronger.
Is there an experience that brought the band together? Or did it just seem to form effortlessly?
I don’t believe anything in music happens effortlessly. Only after a lot of hard work and determination do things start to fall into place.

It’s out of this world – Computer Magic has dropped her new single, “Perfect Game”, which will appear on her brand new record, DANZ, out February 23rd. The LP is released via her very own Channel 9 Records. Brooklyn-based Computer Magic (DJ/Producer Danielle “Danz” Johnson) releases “Perfect Game” as the fourth single off DANZ. She has previously released nine EPs and four LPs (three of which were Japan-exclusive); DANZ will be her second official full-length album. She will celebrate the release of her record with a release party at the Knitting Factory in NYC on March 3 “Perfect Game” is a synth-and-guitar filled track highlighted by Danielle’s smooth vocals that will take you to another universe with its extraterrestrial vibes. This song displays not only the talent of Johnson as she works as an entirely solo project, but also her ability to create something both personal and accessible. We can’t wait to hear the rest of DANZ when it drops later this week.

Australia-based dream pop duo Lyon Apprentice – comprised of brothers Adam and Nathan Lyons – is coming at us HARD with their beautiful, resonating new track “Starlight”. With an almost 2000s boy band feel to the chorus, this track incorporates a stunning blend of genres to make the listener feel as though they are entering some vague level of euphoria. You’ll find yourself not only bobbing your head along, but yearning to be sent to starlight as well.

Los Angeles based duo Swimsuit Issue has released the video for their first single “Look Now”. Swimsuit Issue consists of Miles Garber and Dave Gagliardi. Garber started off as a model in mens fashion while Gagliardi is in a band called Trash Talk.
“Look Now” is about addiction. The video starts off with a news case. In the video, you see Miles Garber as an FBI agent and Dave Gagliardi as a stock market conman. “Look Now” music video looks like it is from a FBI show based out of the 80s. The video displays creative clips and shows what it would be like as an actual FBI agent. The song for the video is really good, but the video for the track is even better.

Los Angeles singer-songwriter Luna Shadows puts twist on her latest single “Youth (Quiet)”, bringing a modern feel to her song. The song itself is exactly reflective of the title, as it’s about remembering who we are and where we come from. “Youth” helps the listener recognize the darkness that comes with love. Thought it is an alternate version of the original single, this version captures her raw vocals. “Youth (Quiet)” shows off Luna Shadows creativity as a songwriter and a vocalist.

Xiuhtezcatl is an explosion of talent. The 17 year old rapper and activist is an indigenous artist who is using his voice to do big things – even leading a lawsuit against the Federal Government (Youth vs Gov). He’s been creating music since age 7, and ten years later, he’s dropping his debut LP Break Free this spring, led by his single “Blu Ink”, featuring his sister Isa. “Blu Ink” is just a sampling of one aspect of his talent, and displays not only his rapping skills but also his passion, complemented by his sister’s vocals. It’s everything you’d expect from an exceptional young artist and yet so much more. Xiuhtezcatl elaborates:
I’m telling my own story as a young artist, a young 17-year-old growing up in this world, and what the hell it’s like to process all that. I’m beyond stoked to release this record, simply because it’s a massive step for me in the world of music…The record is going to change the way the world sees me, and it’s going to change the way that I’ve told my story to the world.
And we cannot wait to hear more of his story.
