gina birch just can’t keep herself from “causing trouble again”

If I’m being honest, any female artist wielding a song with the title “Causing Trouble Again” was going to pique my interest. If nothing else, I am an unashamed feminist and broad supporter of women who speak up and speak out. And while her sophomore album Trouble won’t be released until July, the indelible Gina Birch has unleashed a single with just that name — and just that energy.

Post punk is, perhaps, one of my favorite genres. Watching a group of women have so much fun causing mischief and standing in their power is, honestly, the best part and the point for me. But once you know the reasoning behind the visuals themselves – and the metaphorical connections that were discovered as the concept came together – you may find yourself falling in love with Gina.

After hearing Bob Dylan sing about a white ladder all covered with water, I became obsessed with white ladders. I decided to use five white ladders, three with seven rungs…I realized later that this references Jacob’s Ladder and a connection from Earth to heaven, but I think I was thinking of ladders as a symbol of getting on, getting up. I wanted to have a choreographed movement with four of us with these ladders. How do we move with ladders? Do we move together, do we fight, do we dance?

I also wanted to reference the wind scene from the film, The Colour of Pomegranates, and to include as many artist women from the Women in Revolt exhibition as I could. I wanted them to be troublesome, or just to shout ‘Causing trouble!’ I ended up inviting all the artist musician women I knew who could make the shoot, and it was a fantastic meeting of great women, many of whom had never met each other before.

Stunning. Beautiful. Haunting. Very few words perfectly describe the new video released for Kate Faust’s stunning new single, “Trouble.” As the scene opens, Faust is buried in a cape of darkness that intensifies the mood so wonderfully outlined by the drawn out instrumental loops. Vocally speaking, even the bone chilling beauty of Faust’s tone and timbre instantly creates an edgy atmosphere this is pure perfection. Choreographed down to the last second, every frame is infused with muted colors that are placed in stunning contrast with a sudden streak of yellow lights that morph and shift over the face of this incredible new artist. One of the greatest aspects of this debut is the organic beauty that is completely exposed and is not overwhelmed by complicated or loud instrumental loops.

Like slowly drifting deeper and deeper into a dark pool, listeners will find themselevs drifting into a stupor as their focus turns completely to the musical genius of, “Trouble.” Throughout the video, fans will come to learn that beauty can be found in darkness as Fausts incredible features are masked by the opaque fog and looming shadows. Without a doubt, Faust has proven once again that she has the vocal power and artistic ability to continue to grow and create music that has longterm staying power among her fans.

Swedish artist KIDDO just released her debut single, “TROUBLE,” her first project of 2018. Previously referred to as “one of Sweden’s most exciting and creative songwriters,” KIDDO has written songs for Icona Pop, Dagny, Alan Walker, and more.

Her new single, “TROUBLE,” is an ethereal indie track that boasts KIDDO’s raw yet powerfully unique vocals blended with a futuristic, synth instrumental.

KIDDO describes “Trouble” as a song about escaping reality. “It’s about a time when I knew I had lost everything but it was too painful to face it so I tried to ignore the truth for a little longer in every possible way,” she states. The intimate lyrics pop against the simple, mellow instrumental.  Lyrics like “leave trouble behind” and “take the trouble off my heart” let listeners on an escape adventure as KIDDO sings about letting go of responsibility and relying on love in a time of uncertainty.

KIDDO’s distinctively haunting vocals layered with the light, atmospheric instrumental provides the perfect background to any occasion. “TROUBLE” is a summer playlist necessity.
