Today is officially our one year anniversary. That’s right. We’ve been introducing amazing music to ears around the world, getting behind the scenes looks at your favorite bands, and covering gorgeous live music for an entire year together. That’s not a simple feat, especially in our current publication and music industry climates. I couldn’t be more proud of this project, the passion it was born from, and the loving community that it has facilitated. Thank you, so much.
Today is also my parents’ anniversary, which was the main reason I chose this day to launch the site. Happy Anniversary, you adorable, beautiful, wonderful people! You have inspired so many of my friends – close or otherwise – to constantly say they wish you were their parents. You leave a lasting impression on people, your friends and family adore you, and I am just so proud to be your daughter!
In honor of both of the above facts, I introduce our running September playlist today. Each month, we will have a curated Spotify playlist that grows as the month goes on. This one is pretty scattered – in the most quirky and beautiful of ways – and will continue to be updated throughout the month. (In other words, keep checking back to get in on the new tunes!)

This playlist is the embodiment of Handsomebeast’s new musical and visual direction. We want to paint a picture in the way that some of our favorite films do: dangerously. In reflection of how dynamically eclectic the band is, these songs venture between exciting getaway tunes with high energy to slow burners that can melt anyone into the bedsheets.
With Tarintino-ish vibes from tunes like “Black Venom” from The Budos Band and Adrian Younge’s “Turn Down the Sound”, you could imagine this playlist playing during a well-executed heist (some of our favorite movie plots).
In the other direction lay the smooth after effects of such invigorating action: the love making (yeeeah). Smoke something with Houston’s UGK. Pour one up with Warren G. Grab your partner and slow dance to Daniel Caesar’s “Get You” or Liquid Monk’s “On the Rocks” before the feds bust in.
Some of these artists are huge influences on the band that stuck with us through the evolution of our personal sound, such as Gorillaz, James Brown, Talking Heads, and the Isley Brothers.
Baring in mind how musically diverse the band is, it’s no wonder this playlist ranges from Kendrick Lamar to early 60’s Peruvian Chicha pioneers Los Mirlos. Inspiration comes in many forms, but as long as it grooves, Handsomebeast will jam it.

This month has been absolutely insane for music videos, and we’ve never been more impressed. Jewel tones seem to be the main focus regarding visuals, but the creativity involved in both the concepts of the videos and the way they’re represented is absolutely phenomenal. Dare we say it? August 2018 might be the best month for music videos EVER.
But we’re kind of getting ahead of ourselves. We created a succinct YouTube playlist with 79 of our favorites – yes, 79 – from this month. This list includes the likes of Nahko, Courtney Barnett, Ron Gallo, Blue October, Holy Golden, and many more! Check it out, love on it, find your new favorite!

The playlist I’ve compiled is a combination of songs, sounds and artists that influence Junks and the kind of music I like to mix when i’m DJing at parties or at my monthly retrowave party, Totally Rad.
The list reflects my love of synthwave and 80s synthpop, with songs that give me that warm and fuzzy nostalgic feeling, evoking images of the neon-drenched, Blade Runner-esque cityscapes implanted in my brain from too-much-movie-watching but also from my life here in the futuristic cities of Hangzhou and Shenzhen, China.
