On Tuesday, October 8th, The Bacon Brothers took the stage at The Folly in downtown Kansas City, MO to a well-mannered and vibrant audience. (Even the couple dressed like bacon added a certain je ne sais quoi. For those of you wondering, yes, this would be Kevin Bacon and his brother Michael, who have been making gorgeous Americana music since 1995. So, yes, your head has been under a rock and it’s time to jam out. These men have got some chops, and they’re wonderfully entertaining.
Hailing from Los Angeles, sisters Jennifer and Jessie Clavin brought authentic California punk all the way to Nashville for a stellar show. Their performance was gritty, like their new record Don’t You Think You’ve Had Enough?, from which they performed hits like “Hard To Kill” and “Somebody Dial 911.” They allowed us into a show that felt inexplicably DIY, like we were transported to an underground dive bar in California.
Dodie blissfully treated us to an evening of honest lyricism and simple–but far from boring–ukulele jams. It is a unique experience to see a YouTube star become an in-real-life star, and oftentimes the wonder and awe doesn’t translate the same past the computer screen, where there are no real-life jump cuts or do-overs. This is far from the case for Dodie, who captivated the flower-crowned and glitter-covered audience. She performed her hits (“She,” “Would You Be So Kind,” “Secret For The Mad”), as well as a charming a cappella cover of “Take Me Home, Country Roads” to celebrate being in Music City. Dodie managed to make Marathon Music Works feel as intimate as one of her YouTube videos, as if we were sitting there, watching her magic unfold in her bedroom.
Amidst the magic of the full moon on Friday, September 13th, we found ourselves enjoying the musical stylings of Tobi Lou at Uptown Theater in Kansas City. Highlights below!
On Friday, September 13th, American Football entertained with a powerful performance at The Granada in Lawrence, KS. Photographer Ashleigh Lee caught some highlights for us, which you can enjopy below.
On Friday night, Ben Folds made a spectacular appearance at Starlight Theatre in Kansas City, MO. Our city has an affinity for this man, palpable when he sang a song about making Jason Sudeikis his “piano bitch” back in the day when he used to play The Bottleneck in Lawrence. He and his band entertained until the very last second of the sound ordinance, and what a beautiful start to the weekend it was.
In May 2018, we got our first true chance to see Alex Lahey perform live. Not only were we enchanted by her set in the mid-day heat at Sasquatch Music Festival, but it left us wanting more. Her appearance at 2019’s Outside Lands was one for the books, as she played a pretty packed Panhandle stage early on Sunday and had us reinvigorated for the remainder of the festivities.
Technical difficulties didn’t keep Ruston Kelly from playing a fantastic set on Sunday of the Hinterland Music Festival. After a brief delay to the start of the show, Ruston quickly turned the mood around and got the crowd moving with his energetic brand of Americana.
Maggie Rogers seemed to electrify the energy of the sunset during the final day of Hinterland Music Festival in Iowa. As the glow of the fading sky danced across her face, her vocals rang out across the field in the most enchanting way. Highlights below!
